Plaid Hat Games' GenCon Journey

Indianapolis Will Never Be the Same

gencon

Wow, GenCon. What a whirlwind!

Although Plaid Hat Games has been a staple at GenCon for years, this was my first, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I've been to conventions, even large ones like PAX, but there is nothing quite like drowning in a Interstellar-sized wave of board game loving enthusiasts.

The lead up to GenCon itself was exciting, as the first shipments of Ashes arrived in time to ship over the weekend. The crew worked hard with help from Dallas-area volunteers, and as a result, people all over the place started getting their copies by Monday! The GenCon excitement got started early!

Ashes and Alex

When we arrived, while setting up the news broke that Plaid Hat Games is now part of the F2Z team. You can read about that in our news post, and there is no doubt it is going to be a great partnership for everyone! Needless to say, the buzz was buzzing.

On Thursday, we opened up the convention hall and had 14 demos going at a time, as well as a busy sales staff led by Fearless Convention Leader Brian (at the register below as Alex casts a voodoo spell).

Fernanda Suarez was there all week signing games and doing sketches! Here she is below being interviewed by Team Covenant.

We all commented that seemingly every gamer who demoed with us went immediately over to buy the game in question. This was undoubtedly true for Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn; we brought a ton of copies and they were all gone by Saturday morning! You can still order Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn in our webstore today. Below, Dimona Odinstar watches over the demoing.

All this energy culminated in a quickly-organized 32-person Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn tournament at the booth on Sunday! We had 5 different Phoenixborn in the final 8 and Maeoni defeated Coal for the championship!

We had an incredible group of volunteers who were all-in at the booth and a ton of fun to hang out with the rest of the time. Especially for games of Codenames. Also: Craig Van Ness!

Thanks to everyone who made GenCon 2015 the biggest ever for Plaid Hat Games. See you next year!!
