A Preview of the War Within Phoenxborn

War Within Banner

“Two paths lie before you. One cloaked in shadow, another basked in light. Which will you choose?”

As the War Within Event Series continues, so too does the development of Sembali, an upcoming Phoenixborn. We discussed Sembaili’s abilities in last week’s article, and how they could be used in very different ways to influence the course of battle. This week we’ll be taking a closer look at the unique cards that will be included with either the light or dark version of Sembali. Remember, at the end of the War Within Event Series only one version of Sembali will be released, based on the votes of all players participating in the Event Series. These two unique cards might have slight changes implemented before the release of Sembali. Let’s start off by taking a look at the light card, Veil of Sanctity.

 Veil of Sanctity

Veil of Sanctity

On its surface, Veil of Sanctity reads very similar to another popular Ashes card, Vanish. Both cards allow Phoenixborn to evade enemy spells, abilities and dice by canceling the effects of them. Veil of Sanctity also has the added benefit of conjuration removal. This reaction spell allows you potentially target your opponent’s most crucial conjurations for removal and sway the odds in your favor.  This ability comes at the additional cost of returning an Ally to your hand, though, which means it might not always be available and you’re giving up board state of your own to activate it. It’s up to players to decide if the price is too high to remove that key conjuration!

Veil of Darkness

Veil of Darkness

Veil of Darkness is a very unique reaction spell in that it can potentially exhaust multiple ready spells your opponent controls. Like Veil of Sanctity, it requires that an Ally be returned to your hand. In return, a blocking enemy unit is exhausted, along with all of their unexhausted ready spells unless 1Basic is paid for each one. Veil of Darkness also places 1 exhaustion on ANOTHER ready spell in addition! Veil of Darkness could easily exhaust an enemy’s entire spell board in the late round, or double exhaust a key ready spell.

Both of these unique cards are new and inventive additions to Ashes, but the choice of which ill be added is up to you! The War Within Event Series is still going, so be sure to find a participating store nearby and help decide the fate of Sebali! We’ll be releasing more on this Phoenixborn soon, including artwork and other content! Be sure to check back here every week for more Ashes information, and don’t forget that “The Laws of Lions” and “The Song of Soaksend” Deluxe Expansions will be available soon from retailers and on our own web store. Sembali’s fate is in your hands!
