Everybody's jumping on the Ashes hype train. But nobody got their tickets before Rodney and Luke! (Except ManiacalRaven.)

Watch It Played already has done Ashes gameplay round 1 and round 2, with Maeoni and Aradel facing off. (You can also watch Rodney's Ashes How to Play video.)

The MTG player in me winced at seeing that Molten Gold go to the face. Though I am sure that holding on to removal is less critical in this game since you redraw up to five, so it's not objectively a form of card disadvantage. Still though...

I would have laid down a second snake to replace my dead one and used the remaining Natural dice to ping one of the Mist Spirits. That leaves you with a Snake with 2 status tokens on it that can attack as there are no longer any blockers. So you deal 1 damage to a Mist Spirit and 2 to the face, instead of 3 to the face, and keep your Molten Gold, and have a Snake, and face one less Spirit. Seems like an objectively better play. And if getting rid of one card in hand was critical for some reason (you really want to draw something else), you can toss it prior to drawing anyway.

I was thinking the same thing. I suppose it's possible that Rodney knew what the better play would be, but deliberately made a suboptimal one instead (either for Luke's benefit or in order to show the viewers what Molten Gold can do).
