    Default Are abilities optional?

Just played a game where a Butterfly monk died with that player having no wound markers anywhere, does that mean that player is required to heal the enemy?

I know it doesn't have the word "may" but I am unsure if there is anything in the rules about abilities being optional...?

Haven't seen anything to suggest the effect would not trigger, something needs to get targeted, but can they target something w.o wounds?
A similar card is False Demon. If X, then Y, and there is no 'may' in sight.
Would that same player argue one could chose not to destroy False Demon after X's condition is met?

EDIT: Trying to find examples of conditional targets.
Most other games have a section in illegal actions and rewinds, but Ashes lacks this.

    Closest I can find are:
Dimona "Remove 1 exhaustion token from a target unit on your battlefield."
Refresh "Remove all exhaustion tokens from a target unit"
Transfer "Move 1 token from a target player's non-phoenixborn card onto another non-phoenixborn card that player controls."
    and maybe Coal.

I don't even know. The How to play a card section doesn't give any useful information. It's not like any of these cards target a unit with a respective token, but maybe if an action cannot be carried out the card wouldn't be a legal action? Back during preorder I assumed Ashes would be a simpler game, so I could understand only damaged units being legal targets. But Ashes is all about options, and if 'wasting' an effect could benefit the player it seems like they should be rewarded for understanding and selecting optimal plays. I can't wait for the comprehensive rules, the included booklet is babysteps. Not just an FAQ, COMPREHENSIVE RULES.

You must resolve the butterfly monks last blessing ability even if that would remove a wound token from an opponents unit or phoenixborn. You may target a unit that has no token on it. When an effect or spell resolves, you perform as much of the text as possible and ignore the rest.
