And now comes my and freezinpee's rematch in search of his redemption.
killercactus - Fallen Kingdom (same as above)
freezinpee - Cave Goblins (Beast Rider x1, Berserker x2, the rest 0's, Mook, Blarf, Eater)
Let me preface this by saying that up to this point, I'd won an insane number of Summoner Wars games in a row. Probably like 13 or so in a row on Vassal and 7-8 in a row in real life. I've been lax on battle reports lately, but you can see that my record on the first page starting going through the roof. I had a feeling that my streak was going to end here.
Let me double-preface this by saying that it was extremely close, and the most fun I've had playing in a while. I don't think either side could blame the dice as they were pretty average. My report will not do the game justice.
Freeze won initiative and chose to Assault me, though he missed my Skeleton. That allowed me to kill his Berserker and a Fighter on the first turn, which was a decent start I thought. I drew both Forced Summons in my opening hand and a Dark Sacrifice, which is a pretty poor FK opening draw. I built the Sac and 1 FS, holding onto the other one.
At this point, we played a bit of cat and mouse back and forth. I didn't summon a lot, but pulled out a Zombie here or there to try to get some Infect going, though I think I only got 1 the whole game and it was late. I played my 2 Magic Drains as they came and usually had a very healthy magic pile. He summoned pretty steadily and kept the pressure up. Sneeks spent a lot of time on the front lines, though I avoided attacking him as I wanted to thin the swarm with long-term goals in mind. He used some of his Events early to attack commons (which I was cool with), but he did get my 2nd wall with Horde Attack in one turn.
I summoned Dragos first of my champs, and kept him healthy by eating a diet of 0-cost Goblins. He had Sneeks up by my last wall, and I had a chance to summon Elut and get 4 dice at Sneeks, though I was sure it meant Elut's immediate demise. Instead, I opted to summon him back and help Dragos in the common killing, which worked. After a bit of jockeying for position, I moved Dragos to such a place that Sneeks and a Fighter could reach him next turn, but I had an attack on the Fighter which would prevent Horde Attack and keep Dragos alive. I had a Dark Sacrifice waiting to heal him after Sneeks attacked. I missed the Fighter though, and Dragos was Horded and killed in one turn from full.
At this point, the endgame finally pretty much got here. He summoned Blarf and pumped him up, and sended him towards my zone, Slyed in Sneeks also, and played Invincibility. I moved away from the 2 big Goblins so that neither could get to Elut, and played both LotDs to start getting some commons back to the board. That caused him to summon the Eater to deal with all of them. He also destroyed my last wall with his last Horde Attack. After the Eater ate something, he had 2 magic and only 1 card left in his hand (none in draw pile). I'd gotten rid of pretty much all of the commons, so I was sure that card was Mook. I knew now that if I could get rid of the Eater, he would be hard-pressed to get up to 5 magic quickly with just Blarf and Sneeks before I swarmed Blarf and it was Sneeks against the world (including my full Elut and Skhull still in my hand with a ton of magic and that Forced Summon from the beginning of the game still). The Eater was in a position that he'd either tear through commons the next turn or get to Ret, and I had no walls on the board. So, I dropped a wall, Forced out Skhull and surrounded the Eater with Skhull, Elut and a Zombie. I could've just attacked with Skhull and Elut and moved all of my commons away, but that would've given him a chance to go 3/3 on Ret to win the game if I didn't go 6/7 on the Eater. I chose to play a bit more conservatively and try to kill it with a 6/8 right now.
I got 5/8.
Still alive, the Eater and Blarf combined to one-turn-kill my full Elut, and eat a Zombie, basically assuring he would get Mook out. I killed the Eater but couldn't get to Blarf to take him down just yet. I got him to 3 wounds and Sneeks to 4 before he got Mook out and the 3 rampaging goblin champions killed Skhull and the rest of my commons that survived the Eater. I still had 8 magic, so I knew if I could get away I could play the Raise game and try to ping Sneeks to death with commons and Ret, but Blarf was in my face and I couldn't escape him the next turn, even with Raise. I could still go 2/2 on Blarf though from a spot where I'd be safe from Mook and Sneeks for a turn, thus starting my Raise fest and giving me 5 magic, meaning I could raise at least 7 commons.
I whiffed. Game over.
In hindsight, I probably should've given him the 3 dice at Ret knowing that he'd only have an 11% chance of going 3/3 and winning. If he takes that shot, my Elut survives and I probably take down the Eater and Blarf that turn, which would've at least delayed Mook a bit. However, had I killed the Eater with those 8 dice, I think I'd have been in great shape to clean up. Alas, it was not to be and freezinpee got his retribution and broke my streak. Good game, freezinpee.
