Mice and Mystics

Along with the new site, there is information up for Mice and Mystics.

It looks like a pretty interesting game, although I gotta say its a bit of a cheesy theme to me

But if you haven't check out the Mice and Mystics page. While there aren't rules yet, you can see a lot of the components as well as check out the 6 characters they have up.

Overall it does look like an interesting game, and the production quality does look good. The only other thought I had though was that the normal price is going to be 75 dollars? That's pretty steep. 50 for it seems reasonable and what I'd expect. I'm not in a position to be preordering this product right now, but if you can 50 dollars and 2 promo cards seems like a perfectly fine deal. I'm just worried that someday I'll have to pay 75 dollars for this game, something I probably won't do as for that price I could pretty much buy 2 other games.

So what are others first thoughts though on Mice and Mystics and its price?

I know, in regards to the price, I hope that the "$25 off" portion is a test for how well it sells at a certain price. $75.00, now that I think about it, is a ridiculous amount of money on a game, but then again, there's things that this board game sets out to do that doesn't really have a comparison. We'll see.

$50 is the discounted price that will be available ONLY during pre-order. The game is quite expensive to produce and has a lot packed into its extra deep box. You can check out some of these other titles for a comparison of the cost of similar premium content heavy board games.

Just to be clear, I think many games can be reasonably priced at 75 dollars, and are worth that cost. Arkham Horror is a fairly expensive game that I believe is worth the cost to the high level of components and the number of cards, tokens, and other things contained in it. I guess as a college student, I was just surprised to see the price tag that high, I wasn't expecting Plaid Hat to be producing something on that scale.

As is then that pre-order deal is amazing. If you're planning on getting this game, 1/3 off plus some promo cards seems like something to jump on if you can. And from looking at the pictures, there is quite a bit of cool stuff in it...but hopefully there'll be even more soon to get a fuller idea of what this game is about.

So the game is of a similar size to those listed? I can't really tell looking at the component detail

I'm pretty excited about this after seeing the info and will be watching for the rules to release. Is there a projected release time? Will it be end of summer/fall. I'm just hoping there's at least a couple months to preorder because I'm not ready to do it now, but want to get in before the offer ends.

This does look like it could be an awesome game. I'm definitely interested in preordering, but knowing a release window would help in the decision so I can work it into my budget.

I'm excited for this and I am really curious to hear a bit more about how this game will play. My gut tells me it is a mashup of tile laying dungeon crawl, like D&D Ravenloft and Dungeon Run, plus an enhanced storytelling component like Fighting Fantasy or Tales of the Arabian Nights. I'd love to see something like that. My biggest complaint about the D&D games in particular is that they lack any story. Dungeon Run works for me because it has a fun player interaction element, but story really takes a back seat there as well.

That said, while I'm sure the production for M&M will be great and I realize that quality costs, $75 is expensive for a completely unknown quantity. A quick check on BGG makes this just about the most expensive list price of any game that is recommended for ages 7+ (and that age guideline makes me a little hesitant). Even disregarding the age recommendation, $75 is pretty rarefied air in the boardgames world. Heck, $50 is at the high end.

It sounds like you are buying into a "system" that will need a reasonable amount of success if we are going to see more storybooks well into the future. I hope the high cost of entry doesn't limit the game's reception and prevent those future releases from happening.

I wonder if Plaidhat is just trying to be creative in order to drive more direct sales versus sales through online retailers? If the list price is $75, I would bet the online retailers come in at around $50. The $50 pre-order price then looks reasonable...but still high.

The storybook is hardy and it comes with more than twice as many miniatures as Dungeon Run, I know that. It's comfortably got more bits than DR. I've not played any of the other games to give a proper comparison beyond components lists.
