They are, like said previously, cards that either allow you to discard only 1 card instead of two to Advance, but it requires specific types of monsters (Animates, Beasts and so on depending on the card). Often in a game when you take those skills, you end up not fighting any of this type, but the others do. So now you gain much more from trading, since you can aim for these cards and give away your treasures. Same goes for the Dwarf who can build traps if he has some in his inventory. I've never been able to pull it off, since somehow, only my opponents get traps and I never do.
So in sight of this rule, those ability cards which I thought were extremely situational end up being much stronger and much more reliable, though only through trading.
