Having it delivered to your mum's house is a good strategy, for stealthy acquisition. However, I have terrible poker face, so inevitably give the game (hoho) away when she asks where I got whatever I am now playing....

Have it delivered to your workplace. Shipping is sometimes cheaper to businesses than residential addresses as well.
If you have many games just say "No, I have had this one for a while I just haven't had a chance to play it much before."
Expansions like new faction decks are easy to hide as if they don't know the game it will all look the same to them. Just make sure your friends don't say something like "Oh you got the new factions that just came out!?"
Have a separate bank account you use for game purchases.
If ordering something for your partner off Amazon just group the game in and when they see the credit card charge just tell them that was their gift's price.
Find a new partner who supports your game purchasing habits.(Kidding)

Or you can do what I do, buy them hundreds if not thousands of dollars of stuff they want so when you ask if you can buy some $30 game it seems insignificant to what gets spent on them.

After listening to two podcasts where Risk: Legacy was discussed, and both said that they got to open the "open when a player is eliminated" packet, I find it rather amazing that that happened twice in first games, because people who are wiped out can actually come back the next turn (unless the entire world is occupied or the game ends before their next turn). So I just thought that was odd.

Risk: Legacy is an awesome game, although my group has had our share of regrettable rules misunderstandings that I'm hoping won't screw things up too much. (Such as the guy who one the first game by turning in 4 cards for a Red Star at the end of his turn, which he shouldn't have been able to do until the beginning of his next turn.) I'm definitely glad to hear the game is getting some love from PHG. If I could change one thing about it, I would make the stuff that comes in the packets random, so that somebody who's already played thorough it once wouldn't necessarily know what's coming. Although that would probably just make a 60 dollar game even more expensive....

Yeah Risk: Legacy is just a great game overall in my opinion. I love it. We're close to finishing our 15 game campaign with one more pack to open and it's just been a blast to play through. My friends still haven't figured out that they need to take me out first every game since game 5. I've got a straight shot to naming the world. But I still think it was great and I loved opening all the packs. Some very cool surprises.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion of the revelation from Podcast 45 that both Jex and Bistro have sold off their scape collections (or at least most of them). Maybe it's not that surprising to some, but it triggered something in me. I'm not sure what exactly. Less than a year ago I downsized my scape collection, scaling down to 3x commons and 2x master set terrain. I still have a significant collection and while I could survive without it, I don't want to give it up yet. My kids are just getting near the age of being able to play it and they seem interested, and even though I don't think about it or play it nearly as much as I did, it still holds a special place in my gaming heart. I agree with Colby that I can't imagine letting it all go and not feeling regret. I have very found memories of playing scape and very real friends that I made because of scape. Hearing that two, notable scapers have moved on in letting go of their collections caused me to reflect and realize I'm not making a mistake in keeping mine.

I'm not knocking Bistro or Jex either. Everyone has to make the decision that's right for them and space and money are real issues. I know they aren't letting go of the scape community, just the scape collection.

I agree rudy. As I mentioned in the podcast, if you open the door to my garage, you just might fall victim to an avalanche of heroscape product. My plan is to hang on to it until I am retirement age and then I am going to donate it to the Smithsonian.

I'm not certain, but I don't think about half of the active members listen to the podcast. Out of those, there's quite a few of us that don't own any Heroscape, like me. I didn't really have much to say on the general issue either; I'm kinda young and probably not old enough to feel sentimentalism for really anything right now.

Wait, "we"? Who are you on the podcast...wait, are you Jerry Hawthorne?

Edit: Also, to make a point, Summoner Wars is my first* board game. Never mind Heroscape, I haven't played any other board game before. My gaming background is a video/text game background, hence why when I wax about games nostalgic to me, I point to "The Way" (an rm2k game) and "NEStalgia", as well as "Kingdom of Loathing".

My only knowledge of Heroscape is when I found Jexik's posts on Heroscape.

I'm not knocking Bistro or Jex either. Everyone has to make the decision that's right for them and space and money are real issues. I know they aren't letting go of the scape community, just the scape collection.

It was a combination of getting a bit burnt out on the tournament scene, disliking the long setup time, not playing it outside of a tournament in the last year or two, and wanting the money. Got hit by some car repair at the same time that my tax return was about half of what I expected. If I wanted to pay rent...

I still have most of my terrain (which was never much: 1-2 of most sets and no Marvel), D1-D3, Wave 1, Nilfheim, Krug, Heavy Gruts, and the Master Set figures.

But I've still not played it since I sold the other bits. I may have sold more if Auggies let you have more than 116 items.

I feel that it's relevant to talk about 'scape on the PHG podcast because it's part of PHG's shared history and a number of the early adopters of Summoner Wars came from HS.

Belor sounds like a MV. Retribution sounds like something like a Fencer's Riposte where he does damage when attacked. Maybe gets a bonus if he was attacked the previous turn or maybe just another when wounded type of ability.

Make with the card previews already!

prometheuslkr

Hmm. Retribution is Birodin's ability in Dungeon Run where he does 3 wounds when sabotaged, not just 1. So maybe Belor gets an attack bonus against someone who just attacked him. Or maybe something like a power I had worked on for a custom:

Retribution
When a Unit attacks Belor, all miss die results count as unblockable hits on the attacking Unit.

Btw, over on Blagog, didn't the second podcast say that the SO 2nd summoner was female?

joepinion
06-28-2012, 06:51 PM
That's right, James revealed it in his interview at Blagog.

I also love Resistance and would go toe-to-toe with Colby on that. Seems like his biggest problem is playing with fellow geeks... Ideally, you want a couple geeks, some family members, and definitely non-geek women... That really diversifies the perspectives. Also seems like he's underestimating the human element of looking somebody in the eye and being able to tell if they're lying. Some people can really do that, and some people can do well with judging other by gut feelings. I play very logically, but like I said,, that's why it's fun to play with non-geeks who sometimes think things through differently. (It's also fun to try to manipulate them with that knowledge!)

I think this is why I'd be better at the Resistance if I played with people I don't like. :D I'm a good liar around people I don't know very well. Not so much with friends and family.

My issue with the game is I don't want to listen to a bunch of people yell the same argument at each other over and over again for 15 minutes and then we all vote. Why? Because I'm not going to try to pose a convoluted argument about who it may or may not be on little to no proof and I'm not prone to want to hear others do the same, and so I feel uninvolved almost all game every game.

Phoenixio
06-29-2012, 08:49 PM
I like The Resistance because it's fast-paced and somewhat random: you can never logically exclude somebody unless they really screw up and accuse themselves. You always have to "trust" somebody and work from that, otherwise there's too much variables.

I prefer bigger games like Battlestar Galactica, where you can have more arguments on somebody. But with a guy or two that are quite the speakers, plus any number of geeks that speak less, you really can get epic games of The Resistance. It's become a late night (2 am and later) staple in our conventions in quebec.

Grungebob
06-29-2012, 09:25 PM
I'm with Colby. I have no patience for a game like Resistance. We played with a big group, and afterward, I was talking about how little actually happened. The 2 hours of game time was filled with nothing but shouting and accusing but no real game play. I sat there and I think I made maybe 1 decision. It's like I had maybe 15 seconds of actual game, and another 2 hours of watching people hash out their suspicions.

Our games take half hour max...

Of course, we play 2-3 times. ;)

Phoenixio
07-01-2012, 12:00 PM
Same here, we never really take more than half an hour, whatever the size of the group. We make sure to keep it short, since the game is made so you can stop discussions with confidence votes. No need to talk for hours when everybody can just put their opinion on the table.

Usually, discussions begin to emerge at the 3rd turn or so. During the first two, there are so few clues that you can't really say anything brilliant.

07-02-2012, 10:59 AM
ok, I feel silly doing any explaining but it's seems it's a trend lately for people to take my comments the wrong way. While I do love The Resistance I do play with people who are not that fond on it but still take part of it, so I have seen first hand how it is and why. And also this is the type of game that is pushed forward for you to play, since you are like 8 people and 6 are vouching for it. So for those here are some tips that had made the game more enjoyable for those who have played with me and don't like that much this type of social interaction kind of game.

Time limit (as mentioned before):
Don't let go more than 5 minutes without having a vote. Push forward with "Ok, Leader, propose a team and then let's vote". Thematically it fits because you can't be a resistance and just sit and talk to each other. Mechanically it fist because as the Resistance each failed vote gives you more information, as the Spies you can just push it forward when you like the discussion.

Poll:
The leader is the one that has the power, so his voice should be heard over other strong/voiced players. Making him call the discussion is a good idea too. Like "ok, we already heard that, let's hear what X has to say". Or just ask one by one what team they like (with no interruptions allowed). This makes sure that nobody is left out just because someone is talking louder than you.

Storytelling:
Propose a story at the beginning of the game, and tell how it goes when you are revealing the votes of each mission (better if it's totally silly and related to other jokes). For example, we are trying to overthrow the ideologically stale market with a ground breaking App. For the first mission, what we need is to kidnap some code monkeys (you say this when you are about to start revealing the votes). So you first look into the urban jungle to see if you can find them (reveal success). Then you try to bribe them with some juicy bananas (success). Finally you try to get out of the jungle without being spotted by the Machine Gun Penguins (fail, all monkeys dies).
With that option gone (again, reveal after all votes have been cast), you go to plan B: try to infiltrate a facility where an App is already being developed but change the plans. For that your team has to get past a guard, a Chainsaw wielding Gorilla. Of course you send the oldest/handsomest man in your team to seduce him (it's much funnier when it's a success). Then you have to swap the App plans... (and so on).

The good thing about doing storytelling is that it makes people feel more involved in the game although they are not participating on the mission (usually make the creative guy or someone who is not in the mission tell the story). Also it's fun because you can make it part of the discussions later ("I don΄t trust him!" "Why?" "He can seduce gorillas!"). For example. in a game everybody knew the Resistance had find their team on mission 4, so mission 5 was a formality, but everyone had great fun hearing the resolution of the story, when we won when I married a high officer of the current government, a 'gifted' oil dealer dwarf (you know, at MY expense :P). For me the game IS about making inane arguments and the more inane, the better.

I really enjoyed the podcast, especially the part about going to school to follow a career in games. I originally got into computer science because I really liked video games. Since programming video games wasn't a very realistic path for me here in central Iowa, I now do general programming for a small/successful company here. I really like my job and I wouldn't want to leave it, but I sometimes wounder what major I would have picked if my passion for video games didn't push me in this direction. Comments on Episode 57:
It was good that you acknowledged that some people are 'allergic' to Jesus talk and apologized that a bit. I am cool about that, it is interesting that people share what is important to them and how they see the world.

And I do not think that you lost any Dougs for that, or at least you did not lose me. It was interesting.

It is often interesting to hear people speaking of their beliefs and Colby had good observations there, e.g. "Times are changing and Christianity has to change to survive." But it is not that interesting to hear people telling how good their religion is and after that mocking other people's beliefs... I do not know anything about Oprah (her show does not air in Finland) but I think Alex crossed a line there (with his attitude). At least he knows he has a problem...

So +1 and one thumb up for Colby and for Alex as many minuses and thumbs down as he gained with his excellent Plaid Hat Podcast theme song.

Hi Jan,
My comment about Oprah was a joke about how her celebrity status has gained her an incredibly large group of devoted followers. There is no religion tied to Oprah at the moment, but I also have a sinking feeling that if she were to ever action her position of influence, she would be a force to be reckoned with as she leads an army of immense proportions.

A small part of that worry is that I have seen clips of her show where she has spoken against some core tenents of my beliefs, and with her influence as heavy as it is on large parts of America, I just don't want to see people taking what she had to say about certain parts of scripture and running with it to the detriment of their own faith.

I'd say the comment was 99.9% making a joke :) more dangerous cults are out there.

I don't know how Oprah has positioned herself "against your beliefs," Alex, but her entire media phenomenon has borrowed a great deal from the American evangelical tradition. There's some fascinating scholarship on the religious dimensions of Oprah's enterprise. This NYT article (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/28/us/28beliefs.html) gives a light taste. I didn't mind hearing about your piety on the podcast, but I'm hoping for more gaming and less church in future episodes.

Interesting article. Sounds more like she borrowed the style rather than theology ("beliefs") though. I think some Christians take issue with Oprah's message of an ultimate goodness of humans, and of the need to help oneself by finding the strength that exists inside each person. Biblical Christianity (you could argue) takes a much more pessimistic view of human nature... that although we have great value and are stamped with God's image, created for great things, something has gone wrong and we are totally broken, stained, and beyond fixing, except by an act of God... So a Christian's proper response to the human dilemma is not finding the light inside or believing in yourself, but rather a trembling humility before God. Not an internal solution but an external one. (However I'll agree plenty of Christian preachers are much closer to Oprah's message than they are to that idea.)

Interesting to know from a perspective of what shaped the PHG people into being who they are helping/working for the company, but that only needs a little bit of coverage, not a ton.

If you can't get Wil Wheaton on maybe you could get Rich Sommer on since you already know he plays.

If you every played Diablo 3, just picture Deckard Cain, with a hint of Sean Connery and thats how the voice is done. At least thats the way I pictured it in my head. I do wish I could have talked more about board games though. My actual first hardcore game would have been Dungeons and Dragons, did a 2 year campaign with a group of friends. Every Friday for about 7 hours. Mountain Dew and Pizza galore. I actually learned about Gencon and origins from those guys because at that time they were all playing Legend of the five rings I believe its called. Never touched the card game itself but played a role-play Esq game about it. All I know is that the scorpion clan rocks. Then in junior high I was briefly introduced to Magic but didn't have much interest for that. Instead I played the ultimate board game Chess, and still dable here and there with it.

Yes indeed! It's a scattered pronunciation thing, and it seems to happen mostly in Northern states, and it's only for words that contain "ag" (rather than any occurrence of the "a" as in "at" sound). I lived in Washington state for a couple years, and heard "flayg" and "maygazine" and other stuff like that. My other experience with this oddity is with people from Minnesota.

Another strange thing is that people from Washington will deny that it's a Washington thing, and blame it on another state or on Canada (at least in my limited experience).

I also love when Washington people say "Warshington" and hence things like "warsh the car."

Language! I love it :)

Great question Jonathan. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you on this one.

The Heart Chart was originally developed by my wife and me. I was starting to look for a new job and we decided to brainstorm what we were both passionate about. It's really a simple two step process.

Step 1: We each created a fairly long list of surface level passions, things we enjoyed doing, and essentially anything that came to mind on what makes us tick. Make it a truly exhaustive brainstorm, no limitations, anything you enjoy doing or that gives you energy should go on your list. We had roughly 40-50 items per person. Here's an excerpt from my initial brainstorm:

• New concepts
• Games (RPG/board/card/video)
• Art (creation of/viewing) drawing painting
• Watching movies/TV
• Brainstorming
• Stories (books, audio books, friends, podcasts)
• Communicate visually/visual communications

Step 2: After you have your initial list, boil down each item to a category, which I denoted with the (=) sign. You should challenge yourself to end up with 4-5 categories that encompass the majority of line items. Here's the initial list with the overall category following each line item:

• New concepts = ideation
• Games (RPG/board/card/video) = entertainment
• Art (creation of/viewing) drawing painting = visual, mastery, ideation
• Watching movies/TV = entertainment
• Brainstorming = ideation
• Stories (books, audio books, friends, podcasts) = entertainment
• Communicate visually/visual communications = ideation, visual

Once you have 3-5 words or phrases, congratulations, you've made your very own heart chart!

Now keep in mind that this isn't a scientifically backed exercise, so it might not work for everyone. I can say that it has worked for me. When I play a game or watch a movie, that's not just me squandering my time, I'm doing an activity that I love and that fulfills a part of me. Of course, if I played games all day, every day, that wouldn't be a good sustainable lifestyle, I wouldn't be able to make a living. Moderation is the way to go on that front for me. Anyways, hope that this helps. Please let me know if you have more questions and I'd love to talk. I'll try checking back on this thread from time to time.

In the upcoming weeks my wife promised that she will be posting a vlog episode on how to make a heart chart, so feel free to check out her site: LeadershipLifestyles.com

Thanks for the tip. It's a pretty old house (1891), which was recently refurbed quite a bit. I should call my landlord.

I think part of it is also that I'm using a wireless connection on a desktop, which is super ineffective. Sometimes my room gets the worst connection to our router, and then I can't move to a different part of the house very easily. I was super pumped about the topic and felt I had a lot to say on it. It was my suggestion for a topic too, and was looking forward to discussing it with Rios.

You'll have to revisit the topic next time. :)

I also have the desktop/wireless setup. If you have a spare router lying around, you can put the dd-wrt firmware on it: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index and then use it as a bridge. Set the bridge router somewhere in your room with good reception (e.g. up on a book case). It will connect wirelessly to the main router, then you use an ethernet cable to connect to the bridge router. Here are the instructions for that with a pretty picture: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged

I notice the Sci-Fi channel will rush to push a low budget movie that sounds like a potential hit movie that is about to come out. It tends to have acting that makes soap operas feel Shakespearean, and special effects that could be topped by a 5 year old on a cheap laptop!

From movies, to games, to most anything else that can be sold, there are a lot of weasels out there who would rather just copy someone else, than have to go to all the effort, and risk, of creating something totally unique!

Hey, hold on. Creepy? What?

On my end it sounded like there was a filter on the voice making it sound unreal. Was I mistaken?

thenightsshadow
12-13-2012, 10:21 PM
I don't necessarily have a filter on on purpose. I use a laptop and headset, and while I know about the power remove trick, I think I had my headset configured to a setting for the voices I'm submitting for an LP. It might be the difference between the two, as I can imagine areas where my Voice Acting voice would be much different from my speaking voice. The last "strategy minute" on the podcast (CG a while back ago - more like a CG gushing) my voice is a little cheerier...sorta.

I have the original file and in retrospect and comparison, it makes sense. But it seemed fine at the time...I had just finished recording a minute-long segment and decided to have a break with that and singing.

Hey Dougs, sorry about the Episode 73 rabbit trail, we were starting to run out of steam, especially myself. In hindsight, we should have mentioned innovation in the digital side of board games (iOS, Android, browser, etcetera) as well as not calling the episode "Is Colby the next Psy?" ;) Anyways, here's a link to the exploding chair story: http://www.anorak.co.uk/202541/strange-but-true/boy-killed-by-anal-penetrating-chair.html/

And Spartacus really enjoyed episode 74 of the podcast.

Of course, by 'Spartacus', I'm referring to myself... obviously. I mean, it's on the internet, in a forum, at the beginning of my post. That's the definition of 'gospel', isn't it...?

Spartacus thinks so. And who am I to argue with Spartacus? I mean, myself...

Wow, that is huge news. I unfortunately have not played a lot of his big games yet (Heroscape and Risk Legacy are on the to-get list), but I wouldn't even know about the broader hobby if not for Risk 2210. I was so impressed with how much better it was than the original Risk, and the ad for Cosmic Encounter in the box sealed the deal.

tortugatron
01-17-2013, 02:36 PM
I loved playing risk as a kid with my dad, so eventually we got risk 2210. I wasn't played much and then I rediscovered it in the closet and played it with friends. That game is probably responsible for me getting into board games. And then SW came along and totally exploded the hobby for me. So basically I owe board gaming to Rob and Colby.

champrjk
01-17-2013, 08:06 PM
Risk legacy is by far the best version of risk to date. It's even better if you have a dedicated group of people to repeatedly play with. All the surprises and changing mechanics make you eager to play the next chapter in your conquest for world domination. I'm excited to hear that Colby and the plaid hat crew are teaming up with Rob Daviau to make board games. I'm sure we can expect phenomenal products to continue spewing forth from plaid hat games.

Hey BTBAM, way to go cheating the system :P. Weasled your way in a month early or something. But seriously, great job becoming a play tester... of another game... ...Applying for Vindicators yet?

Also, where was the talk about the dudes on a map game??? I wanted more future of SW talk :/

So I gather that the next second summoners that will be released are FK and VG. Makes sense and that would mean SS releases are following the releases of the first summoners more or less. So, I was thinking... After CL and JE are released, why not make a second summoner master set? Storage is fast becoming an issue, so another box would be great. Oh and I suggest going back to the big box. :)

1. Smeege is a 0 cost Champ that requires payment of 1 Magic every turn. He is already Ranged and combos well with Frick's ability due to being 0 cost.
2. Phoenixes have Greater Flight, and boosts other Units with Greater Flight. Namely Rahlee and other Phoenixes. Also, they are immune to abilities and Events(?) thus better able to protect Mardaria. Ingenius, though not sure if they can protect her against JE Archers.

I'll never buy another game that Bistro Designs, SPECIFICALLY because he said that Glory is an acceptable Villain for BtVS.

BUT, now I've changed my mind, because he redeemed himself by refuting Alex's fanboy excuse making for Joss Whedon who blames his problems (some accurately some not) on "the network."

Joss has done some GREAT stuff, and some pretty poor stuff. He deserves credit for both.
