View Full Version : 3D elements to add to the game

After playing Heroscape for so long the thought of playing a flat game is making me twitchy so I am actually going to make walls to go on the board in the spots where the wall cards are played.
These should be pretty easy to construct.
Now when the expansions come out and new terrain/blocking cards come into play I have to hope that they are not too complex for my building ability :D

I've always thought that if the game really takes off it would be cool to have miniatures done of the Summoners that could ride around on the Summoner's Card during the game for an added glitz element.

That was the next option ;)

The walls in the Battleground: Crossbows & Catapults game look like they would work well.

I don't think the Crossbows and catapults walls look very good, however, I am pretty sure most people could carve something that looked far better from green or pink foam. I may do just that.
I may be keeping an eye out for miniatures that could sit on top of the cards, however, I don't think I really need to add that expense at this point.

Yeah, miniatures would totally just be bling factor. And I personally think that anything in miniature form other than the summoner would be more of a hassle than anything else. You'd have to dig through miniatures to set them on freshly summoned cards and such.

One thing that I really like about this game is that it reminds me of Dreamblade! Unfortunately Dreamblade was canned by Wizards of the Coast, but I loved that game...
Something about this, maybe the board, maybe the card / miniature game feel, reminds me of Dreamblade and i am REALLY looking forward to trying this game out!

Small ruin from Heroscape might work too.

I like the idea of using the C&C walls. They stack nicely, so stack as many walls as the wall has Life Points. It would give a quick visual indication of the damage level on the wall. The higher, the healthier.

The walls start with 9 Life. That is a very tall wall. :D I hope those come a lot to a set. (I've never seen them in person, not sure how big those walls actually are.)

Hrm.... that's a good point about the height. I'll have to check when I get home to see how high that would be. I wouldn't want it obscuring the board too much. The base C&C set comes with 24 blocks, the tower attack expansion has 16, and each of the twin armory packs come with 6. I personally have 46 walls, so that would be enough for 5 full-health walls on the board. How many are possible in the normal game?
You know, then again, adding 3D bling like this makes the game less portable, which is one of the strong points. So maybe I won't do it after all.

I went to the page, right clicked on the image and selected "copy shortcut" from the context menu. You can also right click, select "properties" and copy the URL.
The URL originally used was the URL for the BGG page, rather than for the specific image on the page.

You can still just use the cards for those times when you are traveling with the game. ;)

In a normal game the max possible is 6 full health walls. (If players end up bringing out all of their walls and none have taken damage.) When playing with the Tundra Orcs add 3 additional walls... but those are Ice Walls and only have 3 Life Points to start.
Here is a shot of one of those brick pieces from C&C on the (slightly smaller than the final version) playtest mat and cards.

And a shot of a wall with five of the bricks.

Thanks, Jim!
It looks like 9 of them would be annoyingly high. I do like the idea of a visual (height) indicator of wall strength besides just the damage tokens though, so maybe I'll find some other stackable items to use.

Today we played using Heroscape tiles for the walls...
9 Single road hexes in 2 rows of 5 and 4 respectively. Instead of putting a wound on the wall we simple removed a tile from the stack.
For the Ice Walls we used 3 double hex snow tiles.
I made some walls to use but the paint is not completed on them and they will be part of my "CUSTOM DELUXE SUMMONER WARS BOXED SET"...which will include a custom board...the walls...and a tray for all 4 decks, dice, wound markers.

If there are ever things like traps, like an explosion trap it could change spaces neer it to a lava terrain for a while or something, and you could use 3--D things for that.... Or if there is ever like a Forest event/card which represents a forest which is impassable you could use a tree for that (like from heroscape) but that kind of stuff is probably a long way off if ever.

Another option for Good walls is using some of the Megabloks Dragons Series Walls. They look effective and if layed horizontally they are the aprox width of a card.
For the Summoners Im using D&D Figures, I agree that Other unit minatures would add to much complexity.

I think that will be a good idea to make walls with a slot for a D10 on the top.
Anyway I don't think that using 3D elments is a good idea. It's cool at first look, but it change the original feel of the game.

On a ridiculous side note I love crossbows and catapults. A whole bunch of us recently got together and played a massive 3vs3 game using all the available stuff that I happened to find cheap at toys r us a few years back. Great game. I also happen to have one of the originals as well with the barbarians and vikings. Great stuff.
Anywhoo I'm thinking of converting the game into legos. Might be entertaining. Works well for walls/figures/board. I'm just not that great and building the massive boards and such. I'm thinking the cave goblins I'll use the available orcs. Unsure what to do with the tundra orcs as there aren't any blue orcs available. The FK kingdom and dwarves are easy enough to make. Elves a little harder, but doable I think. Might be a fun little project to work on.
