I am running run a Summomer Wars tournament at All American Cards and Comics on April 23 at noon. Ignore the date of April 30 in the thread title - I can't change it.

Format would be standard rules, $5 entry fee. You dont need to bring a prize as long as you pay the $5, but you can if you like.

I'd like there to be no time limit on games since I don't have chess clocks, but if enough people have them to bring them I'm all for it. We will play 5 rounds as long as time permits. If enough people have iPhones / Smart Phones and can download the free Chess Clock app, we can use Chess Clocks with 30 minutes per player. I have the app and it works perfectly.

Anyone with premium boards, please bring them. I have one and 4 mats, but I'd like us to not have to play on paper.

I promise it to be far better organized than the last Scape/SW tourney as there's way less setup time and it won't be tax season. Greg says there should be some upstairs table space to play on, which I like since it's warmer up there and I want some of the MtG players and such to see the game.

At least the following prizes will be available:

Cloaks x2
Jungle Elves x2
Vanguards
Fallen Kingdom
Sairook x6

Definites - 7

I know that I actually won't be able to make this one. I've verbally committed to a tourney in Minnesota that same weekend.

I'm definitely interested. I can't commit yet as I will be playing on 3 various sports teams around that time that may play on that Saturday, but I'll keep you updated. I would like to play more Summoner Wars events

I'm interested. If I'm in the area, I'll be there but I don't know if I'll be that way in April...:(

I have yet to make it to an event, I'm very upset about this.

To let you guys know, the date can be a bit flexible. I can probably back it up to the 23rd, or maybe even move it forward to the 7th if that will attract more players.

By the way, my plan right now is to start doing monthly events in Warren, alternating between Heroscape and Summoner Wars. I already have a Scape tourney in the works for May, so June would be SW again (anticipating a big Master Set release tourney...).

Double post to let everyone know I've added a list to the first page of people that have expressed interest, which is pretty promising so far. If Mattser comes, there will probably be some more players with him. gamjuven, I'd also expect we'd see happyjosiah if you make it?

I'd hope that I can get at least one of my friends that I've introduced the game to to show up. I'd like to play even if we only have 5-6 people, as we can still play 4-5 games that way just by letting everyone play against each other once.

And KCU, just make sure that you come home for a weekend in April, and then you can make it to an event. It's not hard. :)

Ah, but the trick is getting a weekend off work and being able to afford the trip.

EDIT: I knew I was coming up a weekend that month. We'll be up there Easter weekend which would be the 23. My odds of attendance would be fairly good. I may even be able to get at least one of my brothers up there, Minion Kid!

Like I said, I could probably do the 23rd instead, and would do so if it would get more people to come.

I would most likely be able to get there in that case. If enough other people can make it that weekend I'll be there.

I'm going to go ahead and just change it to the 23rd now, since I think it's probably well enough in advance that it doesn't mess up peoples' plans. If anyone has a beef with the 23rd (like Easter weekend being an issue), let me know.

There you go, Jexik. Now you don't have an excuse not to drive 7 hours again. :)

Woohoo!! It has been way to long since I've been to a game day. Mark me as a baring anything unforeseen (or whatever category you already have that such a commitment would fit under).

EDIT: Oh yeah, my wife will be coming with me.

It's still a bit far out for me. I wouldn't change any plans based on getting me to go or not.

Easter is often one of the few weekends that the family gets together at my Aunt's house for a big meal and a chance to catch up.

My going again would also be contingent upon other people (or me getting a hotel room). You're way on the eastern side of the state. I guess if I totally went crazy I could get up even earlier than I did this last weekend, but the time change is a PITA- a 7 hour drive is magically an 8-hour drive when it comes to what time I need to get up.

And either way, I'll be going to MN the weekend of the 30th, so it's probably a stretch to do two in a row.

I have confirmed the 23rd in Wareen. We will be upstairs to hopefully get some of the MtG players to see the game.

I think I'm gonna do the $5 entry fee and order the following from Plaid Hat tonight (with my CL/JE order):

Cloaks deck x2
Jungle Elves deck x2
Vanguards Deck
Fallen Kingdom deck

That's $60, so 12 players with a $5 fee will cover it. That will also provide 12 prizes (6 decks and 6 Sairooks), so everyone gets something. Feel free to bring a prize anyway if you like. I'd like to give 1st place both new decks. If there are more than 13, I'll reduce the fee. If there are 13 players, I'll throw the extra $5 in as a prize.

KCU Master 2007
03-10-2011, 01:43 PM
So no prize required, just a $5 fee. Alright.

killercactus
03-11-2011, 12:49 PM
OK guys - I put in the order for the stuff listed above, so we have some prizes!!! I also shot truth a PM to see if he felt like offering anything else.

And yes - $5 fee, no prize required. I think that's easier as SW isn't available in many FLGS, and the Warren store doesn't carry it (yet).

Josh - if you do order some extra stuff to bring as prizes, get some Reinforcement packs. I punched myself in the head after forgetting about ordering them to begin with. I bet there are some players that will be there that would rather have those (or maybe a premium board) than a starter deck they might already have.

I am a maybe, but my Birthday is the 21st and it is close to the end of the semester, so I might be doing other things that weekend. I would like to go to one Summoner Wars Tourney before Origins though, so I know what is required to run a tourney. I have played the game 2 days in the last two weeks, which is a lot better than once in the previous year, so I am beginning to like it more, but I still like a certain other game better ;)

If I do come, order some reinforcement packs too.

BUMP

Just wanted to keep this thread alive and kicking. Anybody have updates on additional prizes purchased, or players coming to the tournament?

I'm still trying to work on my brother and a couple of my friends to get there, but nothing definite yet. I'd really like to get this into the double-digit player range.

Also, if enough people have smart phones and we really wanted chess clocks, I was able to find a free chess clock app for my iPhone that should work. We COULD get 5-6 people to download it and voila! Chess clocks!

Jebuh214

It looks like it's just called "Chess Clock". There are a bunch of them, but I got the free one. Without screwing with it, it gives each player 30 minutes. Phantazm and I tried it out yesterday and it worked great (except when I kept forgetting to hit it when my turn was over).

And Jebuh, that's awesome! Hope to see you there!

Just another reminder to everyone - the date is APRIL 23RD, not the 30th. I can't change the title of the thread.

Also, right now I'm about 87% sure I'll be playing Jungle Elves (Jungle Fever). That probably means you can bet most of your savings account that I won't play them, as I usually change my mind 100 times before a tournament.

I definitely will not be playing Tundra Orcs though, as my last (and only) tournament so far was with them. I don't really like the Dwarves, so I can scratch them, too. And, I'm really bad with the Cave Goblins, and I don't want my first full tournament to be with a faction I suck at using, so forget them.

I really like my Phoenix Elves deck, too (Blaze of Glory), so I could see myself busting that out. Hmmm....

I just want to make sure, you can only play with a single deck for the whole tournament correct?

killercactus

Yes - you have to pick a faction, build your deck before the tournament starts according to the deck-building rules in the rulebook, and play with that exact deck in each and every round.

Future tournaments I run will probably allow (or force) you to play different decks in each round. I really like Rychean's GenCon tournament where you have to play a different faction in each of the 5 rounds, but I want to start simple.

Jebuh214

Okay thanks, then I will probably be playing as either the Tundra Orcs or the Phoenix Elves, and my friend, if he is able to come, will play as either the Phoenix Elves or the Fallen Kingdom.

Just a bump to keep this on everyone's radar. The date is coming up - I'm excited about playing, but a bit less excited about the number of people that have confirmed they can come so far. It looks like we'll be struggling to break double digits.

Can anyone else confirm they're coming for sure yet? Anyone have extra players to bring? I'll hopefully be seeing the Columbus guys a couple of days before the tourney so I'll try to convince them to drive up.

Just realized this is between good Friday and Easter and also during passover. I am doing a seder on Friday night, and going to church on sunday, but I might make it out, again mostly so i am prepared to run summoner wars at Origins. Still a maybe, but lets say 75% chance of yes in the probables column - I will know for sure sometime next week. I never built a faction deck and don't have expansions or more than one of each set, so most likely will be standard build if i come, other than maybe adding Khan Queso unless someone has some other mercenaries to let me borrow.

If you want to borrow something, I probably have whatever you need. I doubt the deck I play will have any Mercs in it. My VG deck has 5x Spear Grounder and Sairook, but I have 6x Sairook and 10x Spear Grounder, so I should still be OK if you need to borrow.

Good to hear from you, Bob - I'll see you on Saturday.

I just self-played a test game with my JE against my PE, and the PE won in a landslide. Of course, it didn't help that Miti Mumway and a Lioneer went 0/6 against a Fire Beast that made it's way to my side of the board to assault Abua (rolled 1-1-1-2-2-2 - ridiculous).

I really like that PE deck.... it's gonna be hard not to play it.

I should be there a bit early tomorrow, and will bring my paper mats in case we don't have enough boards. Remember to dress warmly in case we have to play in the basement, though we should be able to play upstairs.

Hey, about a link with directions?

killercactus
04-22-2011, 08:32 PM
Address is:

161 W. Market St.
Warren, OH 44481

From East Liverpool:

Take 11N towards Canfield/Austintown. It turns into 80E, and then you follow 11N towards Ashtabula/Warren. Take 82 towards Warren and stay on it until it turns into East Market St. E. Market runs straight into the downtown square, and All American is on the left. You should actually make a left on Park or one of the streets before, as the parking garage is directly behind the store. It's free on the weekends - you can park there or in the street in front of the store if you can find a spot. I think the meters are free on weekends, too.

The guys coming from Cleveland-ish should know where it is. Turnpike to 80E to 11N - see above.

From Columbus or anywhere west / southwest really, you'll want to take 76E or 80E (turnpike), both of which turn into 80E, then get off on 11N towards Ashtabula and see above.

From Pittsburgh, I'm not exactly sure. I'd think the best bet is 60N to 80W to 11N - see above.

Miti was just out and down there way too fast in our game. The JE can really punch you in the mouth fast if they get the right draw and a couple kills. I learned that quickly yesterday.
