Played a game of Summoner Wars against Rodriquez last night.
I played dwarves - he played elves.
It was his first game.
I hate him.
Not really, but arrrgh!!
Well, I won the die toss and elected to go first to show Rod the ropes (it was his first game) on movement, attacking, and magic building. I moved my units, attacked his elves, and whiffed my attack rolls. I did manage to get one hit on him, but it was on his Guardian, who has 2 life anyway, so no magic for me.
Rod's turn.
He draws, gets Spirit of the Phoenix - twice! - and puts both of them on two of his archers. Now he outranges me and he has a precision shot. After movement, he attacks and 1,2, and 3 dwarves fall to the slender elves. This would prove to be the case most of the game.
My turn.
I draw my starting hand and get 2 Engineers and a Wall. I place the wall and move my remaining units still on board. I attack one of his dwarves and manage to get a kill. Score one magic point for me. I throw away my two remaining cards. 3 magic points.
Rod goes and takes out my remaining units on board (I think it was a defender and a spearman I had left at this point, not counting my Summoner Oldin, of course).
Rod's slowly building his magic pile and he's doing it without throwing anything away. Arrgh, but that guy frustrates me at times!
I draw, adding to the 2 engineers I held in hand from the last round.
Score!!!
I drew my champions. All three!
Hot damn! Except that the cheapest one is 4 summoning points, and I only have 3 magic points to play with. Hrummph!!
Well, I use 2 of my magic points and place my engineers down. I figure, what the hell, take out his wall and he can't do squat. He can kill my schmatties all day long, but if he can't summon? Suck it baby.
2 engineers. 2 attacks. 6 points of damage. I rock.
I look at my cards, realize I'm behind the eight ball in magic points and throw away 2 of the champions, and I save Bad-ass Baldur.
Some back and forth goes on for a few rounds.
Rod draws a wall, plays it, kills my engineers, and unbeknownst to me, I was out of the little fellas.
Rod is a tactical magician, making use of Blaze Step and precision attacks, and he moves his summoner towards midfield...
I finally, after a few rounds, manage to throw down Baldur.
BAM.
I move him next to his Summoner, and wham!!!
3 hits on the leader of the elves.
Rod simply looks at me and asks me, "You sure you're ready for this?"
Now, when Rod asks you that, he usually has a diabolical move or scheme...or something... in mind, and it usually takes you aback.
"Hell, yeah, I'm ready. Bring it on mo**** f*****." (Yes, I had a few beers by this point).
He brought it on.
I got nothing to fear, right?, because he has to get a hit on all attacks for me to take any significant damage, and I got 4 lives.
He plays Spirit of the Phoenix on his Summoner. 3 automatic hits on Baldur. I realized the folly of the situation at this point.
And I do remember thinking at this point, "Well at least I didn't have to drive to Dallas to get my ass kicked."
His Fire Drake shoots from afar and, just like that, dead Baldur.
I have Oldin on the board and 2 walls.
No units.
5 cards left in my draw pile.
Rod's summoner is sitting 2 spaces away from my wall.
I only need one unit. One hit. And I win. Rod with his 6 units on the board. Me with my summoner.
My turn.
I draw my final cards and wouldn't ya know? 5 event cards, 3 of which are useless but I did pump up Oldin to 4 attack with Heroic Feat and smashed his Guardian with 4 hits. He surrounds me with 2 gaurdians and the Fire Drake.
Oldin falls.
It was a fun game, and it just goes to show you, the game can swing either way and it really did come down to the final round.
Good times.
And yes, I've worked on my shuffling technique since then. :p
