View Full Version : Deck Building MetaGame Already?

...we have not even started with the deck building metagame yet.
Any chance you could expand on this, Grungebob?
I've only played two games, but after looking at the deck building instructions it seemed you can only really change the common troops and champions.
And it didn't seem worth it to buy more starter sets to get more common troops.
When you referred to the "deck building metagame" do you mean what you and other playtesters are experiencing with access to a larger variety of cards or am I just missing something because of my limited experience with the game?

Yes, that is what he is saying. There are lots of other things already in playtesting.

As more cards are available we will have:
Each faction will have:
New commons
New Champions
New Summoners
New events
New terrain types (Things to build besides walls)
New game variants
New factions
Mercineries galore both champions and commons
So as you can see there are many things that will enhance the game, but as is Colby's style: BALANCE! It must be achieved and this can only be done well if the environment is controlled. No power creep, no broken cards/powers etc. Start the game tight and work outward.

So many possibilities! Can we leap ahead about a year and half so we can have some of these things?
And, even with the restricted building rules and cards available right now, there is still room for changes. Each army has 3 commons they can build around right now, so while its not huge amounts of variation right now but it is a shadow of things to come.

My responses to GrungeBob's really exciting points are all the not bold bits...

New Champions
New Summoners HOLY COW! I figured new champions and commons but new summoners for a faction didn't even occur to me. This lets you have a new start card as well. Those start cards seem like a great way to control things and stop power creep/insure balance.
New events Again I didn't think there'd be new ones, but it makes sense if you have new summoners.
New terrain types (Things to build besides walls) Another Holy Cow! Didn't even realize that could be a possibility--that's just cool. What could they be? Crypts for the hinted about undead guy?
New game variants
New factions
Mercineries galore both champions and commons "Galore"? I was thinking a few, but galore, huh? Again it seems like mercenaries are another good way to balance customization of decks with control to insure game balace.
Man, I have played 2 games. One with rym and one with my son and rym has already called me (2 days later) saying we need to play again.
So we seem hooked and reading all this stuff has got me pretty excited about stuff that's coming.
How soon to 1500?

Oh, man that's awesome. I didn't anticipate half the stuff on that list. I was excited before, but now .

As it stands now, two players can play the same deck in relatively different ways. Once the expansions come out you're going to see players take the same factions in interesting new directions.

Can't recall where it was said, but I think expansions will be packaged in tuckboxes at 7.95 each.
Can't wait to see what the cards say... is it time for rampant speculation?

The first wave of expansion will include an all new Faction - The Vanguards, an all new faction - The Fallen Kingdom, a Reinforcement pack that has new Phoenix Elves, Tundra Orcs and Mercs in it and a Reinforcement pack that has new Guild Dwarves, Cave Goblins and Mercs in it.

Is it me or did it appear that we immediately transitioned from a hopeful guess to marking our calendars? :)
Well if we want June we're all going to have to do our best to expose as many people to Summoner goodness as possible. Tis the season.

will the new factions be in another $25 starter set like the others out now?
also, do you know how many cards are in each of the reinforcement packs?
sorry for all the questions, im just so curious :)

No the new factions are in tuck packs. You don't have to re-buy all of the components to the game to get a new army. New faction packs come with 35 cards and I believe Reinforcement packs will come with 38.

I think he was mostly talking about sales. Most of those posts are from a year ago.
One thing I've noticed among more experienced players lately is shifting away from 1-life commons and towards more magic building and champion summoning.
In general though, this game is less about deck building and more about how you play it.

Ever since I've started playing SW, I've found myself leaning on my champions and expensive commons more (except when playing Goblins). The reason is simple - less commons on the board = less magic your opponent gains by killing them.
1-life commons mean that your opponent can gain 1 magic by inflicting 1 wound. 2-life commons cut that "Magic / Wound Ratio" in half. Champions drastically cut into it.
This is why I think I'm going to LOVE the Tundra Orcs when the reinforcement pack hits. Thwarters and Shamans provide two different commons with 2 life that summon on 1 magic, and Thwarters are tough to kill. Plus they have the 4-life Smasher, AND they have Reinforcements which allows them to get their units onto the board without spending their own magic. I think the Orcs will be able to play a pretty clever game of keeping the opponent tight on magic by utilizing cheap commons with multiple life points.

Unfortuantely I think it will be a while, according to somewhere on Bgg, there gonna get out 16 factions and reinforcements for each, then a second summoner for each, then some surprises. So were looking at like 2013 at earliest
