Hey all,

This isn't set in stone yet, but looks like it has a decent chance of happening, so I thought I'd post it here also. The details can be seen on the Heroscapers site here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=33787).

Our next NE Ohio tournament will combine Heroscape and Summoner Wars, and will take place January 8th, 2011 at All American Cards and Comics in Warren, OH.

There would be three 45 minute games of Heroscape and three 45 minute games of Summoner Wars (it will go HS, SW, HS, SW, etc). There will be no break in-between, so eat before you come. Sign-ups begin at 12:30, and dice roll / cards fly at 1. Please try to be on-time since I usually budget more time for sign-ups, but I can't be there until 12:30. The store opens at 12, so feel free to come early. The Heroscape games would be 450 Point armies, and the Summoner Wars games would be the normal format game, which means you have to pick a faction and play it. At least 300 Points of your Heroscape army has to be the same "race" as your Summoner Wars faction:

Phoenix Elves = at least 300 Points of Elves
Tundra Orcs = at least 300 Points of Orcs
Guild Dwarves = at least 300 Points of Dwarves
Cave Goblins = at least 300 Points of Goblins (finally possible thanks to Cutters and Brutes)
Vanguards = at least 300 Points of MELEE humans (defined as Range = 1. Humans with Range = 1 but that have Special Attacks or Powers with Range > 1 are legal)
Fallen Kingdom = at least 300 Points of Undead

Please bring your own army cards, figures, combat dice, D20's, D6's, and Summoner Wars faction deck. I will also need some additional Summoner Wars boards (I have one regular board and I should have at least one premium board by then), so bring those, too. Marvel and all custom figures are not allowed. Samuel Brown is legal, but only as a "mercenary" (i.e., part of your extra 150 Points, since he doesn't fit any of the race restrictions). You must have the correct sculpt to use him.

The tie-breakers go like this:

1) W-L
2) Points
3) Best W-L record of EITHER Heroscape or Summoner Wars
4) SoS

Scoring will be full-card scoring for Heroscape battles. Scoring for Summoner Wars battles will be determined by the amount of wounds dealt to the opposing summoner. If a Summoner Wars game goes to time, the player with the most WOUNDS DEALT to the opposing Summoner is the winner (so if you're playing Elves vs. Orcs and you wound Grognack once, and you're Elien hasn't been wounded, you win even though Grognack has more life than Elien still). If both Summoners have the same amount of wounds, the player whose Summoner has more REMAINING LIFE wins. If both are the same, the game is a draw (which is better than a loss but not as good as a win). Calculate your points as follows:

[Note - there's no official way to determine a winner in Summoner Wars when a game goes to time, so I'm sticking with this]

Since we calculate Points for each Heroscape game, we're going to do the same for Summoner Wars by doing this:

You kill the opposing summoner = you get 450 Points.

You don't kill the opposing summoner means you use the formula below:

Each common in either players' Discard or Magic pile = 10 Points
Each Wall in either players' Discard or Magic pile = 30 Points
Each Champion in either players' Discard or Magic pile = 50 Points

I couldn't copy the maps over - so use the link above to check out the Heroscape maps that will be in play.

I have already talked to you about it, I'm still interested. But maybe if people see that there are already people interested they may be more inclined to come as well.

Sounds really fun! I wish I could go. I have one the same day, but on the other side of the country. :) Here is the link for West Coasters who stumbled onto this thread, wishing for SW gig in their area:

See...now I know Jexix is wanting to show makes me really upset that I won't be able to make it.

Oh well. Have fun.

Just an update in case anyone is actually following this here....

This tournament is now 100% happening. January 8th, at All American Cards and Comics in Warren, OH. Sign-ups start at 11:30. I've updated the OP with all of the relevant information.

I have no idea what I'm going to play yet. I have solid ideas for Elves, FK and Goblins, and can't decide which to use. It will probably be a game-time decision.

Any chance for a Summoner Wars-only tournament in the future?

I'd say pretty strong. I'd definitely be up for hosting a Western PA Summoner Wars tourney if I could get enough people to play.

I'm sure there's some chance for that. I haven't played Scape in a while though - especially with the new release - so I wanted to get some of it in as well.

Cool. Keep us posted. I just got into the game, have two premium boards and all the current factions (still waiting on my Reinforcements), and live in Niles.

When it is all Summoner Wars, let me know. If my schedule allows, I am there!

magehammer, even if you don't play Heroscape, I encourage you to come up to All American to hang out with us. If you'd like to play in the tournament, I have more than enough Heroscape stuff to get you set up with an army, and there will be enough great Heroscape minds there to explain the game pretty thoroughly to you.

Even if you don't want to play Scape, I'd have no problem just letting you get play the Summoner Wars if we have an odd number of players. That way at least no one is sitting out during SW.

And even if neither of those things happen, I'm sure you can get a game or two in during the day, and at least meet the local players.

Thanks for the invite KillerCactus.

However, that date is my bi-monthly Magic the Gathering game night, and I don't think my wife would appreciate me being out of the house the whole day. :)

So, hopefully, the next tournament will fall on a better day for me.

I love playing this game and hope to play it against new players. I will be there some day.

I posted this over on the heroscapers forum but I will post it here as well. I will not be able to attend the tourney. It sucks. The person that was going with me backed out today and now I'm stuck not being able to go. I'm sorry for the confusion and hope you guys have a great time. I look forward to hearing everything about it.

Everyone -

I had to back the tournament up an hour to 1:00. I have a work seminar that day that ends at noon, but I can be there by 12:30. Hopefully this isn't too big an inconvenience. All of the setup will be done the night beore, so no big deal there.

Hey, killercactus,

Where did you get the point value for the Summoner Wars warbands? Did I miss something in the rulebook or are the point values posted somewhere else?

Oh, those are Heroscape points values?

Thanks in advance.

If you're talking about the "Phoenix Elves = 300 Points of Elves" thing, that's just a custom rule I made up for this tournament, since it combines Summoner Wars and Heroscape. It just means that your Heroscape army has to have at least 300 Points of Elves in it if you're playing Phoenix Elves for Summoner Wars.

If you're referring to the "Commons = 10 Points, Champions = 50 Points, etc.", I made those up. Since Heroscape operates on a Points system, I needed a way to mimic the scoring for Summoner Wars since we're playing both games in the tournament.

Okay, convinced Josiah to come along. Very nice of him. So barring any other unforeseen events we should be there at the tournament. As I said before I have two premium boards and Josiah and I won't be needing any heroscape or summoner wars equipment as I have enough for the both of us. Again sorry for the confusion but hopefully now it's as set in stone as it can be.

Excellent. The only problem is that now I have to setup another Scape map. I only have about 90 minutes on Friday night to setup 7 maps.... I'm gonna need some help :)

My latest tournament combined two games into one event - Summoner Wars and Heroscape. You could play any Summoner Wars Faction, but your Heroscape army (450 points, 24 hexes) had to have at least 300 Points of the matching race. Only 11 players here, but the field included truth and Jexik, which was exciting for us!

I was pretty set on playing Phoenix Elves and a WoA + 10th Regiment army since there was sure to be lots of melee. I felt cheesy playing that though, so I told someone to flip a coin for me to decide whether I'd play that or Orcs. Orcs won the flip, so I played this army for Heroscape:

Death Chasers x5 - 275
Nerak - 325
Ogre Pulverizer - 425
Swog Rider - 450

My Summoner Wars deck:
Spoiler Alert!

Grognack + Events

Rukar
Bragg
Ragnor

Shaman x5
Smasher x5
Fighter x2
Thwarter x5
Charger x1

Summoner Wars Games First - Round 2 and 4

Round 2 - Raudulfr Shieldcrusher (Vanguards)
Bob was playing the Vanguards, which I actually wasn't expecting to see too much of. However, I was running enough Shamans and Smashers that I felt pretty good. I'd have a lot of chances to kill his 2-life commons in one attack.

I was able to get some magic early with a Smasher going into his zone and also with some accurate Shaman shots. I tried to keep building to at least 5 or 6, so that if I got Ragnor or Bragg I could get them down. I also tossed 2 Freezes on Sera pretty early to try and keep her where she was. Bob spent 4 magic (which was all he had - the Orcs are great at denying magic by just not dying) to remove them.

I drew Ragnor quickly and summoned him. Along with some Shamans, I was able to crowd his walls to keep his summoning in check. A timely Fury or two by Ragnor helped back Sera into a corner, and I finally engaged her and scored a couple wounds. Bob dropped another wall, but I was able to continue to summon Shamans and Smashers to crowd his walls completely, so that he couldn't summon to save Sera. Ragnor got 2 more wounds onto her before a Priest, double-boosted by Holy Judgment, took him down. By that time though, I had a Shaman to back him up, and had just summoned Rukar to follow the Shaman. The Shaman's Unwieldly Magic failed, but Rukar certainly didn't. Grognack was never threatened.

Win, 1-1, 380 Points.

Round 4 - Jordan (Tundra Orcs)

I'd never played a mirror match before, so this was going to be interesting. Shamans were extra awesome here since they could just rock opposing Smashers. I went first, shot a Smasher and moved my Smasher up. Again I built up some magic, all the while holding a Reinforcements and expecting to use it to catch up. We both froze each other's Grognack.

Jordan dropped a Reinforcements and made a charge towards my zone. However, I was able to summon Ragnor on the next turn, and I rolled Fury 4 times in a row, sending him all the way down to Grognack. In addition, I was able to kill his Smasher charging me en route, and my Thwarter also got his Shaman on the other side. All those attacks in one turn was huge. Ragnor didn't get any wounds on Grognack that turn, but he caught up to him, and Grognack was still frozen, and Jordan didn't have any magic. I got a Shaman down there also, and Ragnor and my Shaman took down Grognack very quickly with some good dice. Jordan never really recovered from that super-Ragnor turn. The game only took about 15 miuntes - sorry about that, Jordan. The dice were making up for my bad HS game against truth.

Win, 2-2, 530 Points.

Heroscape Games - Rounds 1,3, and 5:

Round 1 - Heroscape vs. southwest ninja (Grimnak, Nerak, Heavy Gruts x4) on Spineback Ridge

I seem to play Terry at every event that we have. There were 4 treasure glyphs spread across this map - one on each side and 2 in the middle. I liked Battle Rush here, since gaining positioning in the middle of the map - where all the height was - would be important.

I rushed my orcs forward, and positioned Nerak towards the middle of the map on high ground. He did the same with his Nerak, and then started mobilizing Grimnak and I brought in the Ogre. We traded Orcs in the early going, which was bad for me. Both of our Neraks died pretty early. My Ogre picked up a Brooch of Shielding on my side of the map, and Grimnak grabbed a Heroic Rune.

Once we clashed in the middle with our heroes, I took the first opportunity I could to whiff with my Ogre and get backhanded for 2 wounds. However, on the next turn, my Brooch allowed him to disengage and get height on a once-wounded Grimnak, and the Ogre killed the mighty Orc in two huge swings. My Death Chasers killed some gruts on that turn as well, and things started looking up. On the next turn, my Ogre picked up the Rune and attacked a Heavy Grut - and whiffed. 5 dice - nice. Even nicer was that the Grut rolled 3 shields. Awesome. The Ogre died soon after, as did my Swog Rider as soon as I brought it in.

Terry started gaining the upper hand through his greater number of attacks, and he was also getting the high ground more often on the towers. Even through all of that though, the Death Chasers' 4 attack was able to take them down from height and keep me in the game. There were multiple turns where I just needed to make one roll here or there to gain the upper hand (initiative, attack, or defense), and I didn't make any of them. I can't say that my dice were bad this game, but they let me down at critical times. Terry won with 2 Heavy Gruts left. What a game.

Loss, 0-1, 380 Points.

Round 3 - Heroscape vs. truth (Gilbert, Knights x3, Raelin, Tarn Vikings) on Ticalla Sunrise

I thought it was really cool that I got to play a game against truth, and I was very thankful that he and Jexik made the long trip to Warren to play. However, I wish there was more to say about this game. First of all, I have no idea what I was thinking at the beginning of the game when I placed my figures and battle rushed. I put my Ogre and Swog on the Unique Attack glyph side of the map, when the Wound Glyph was sure to be more important. By the time I realized it, it was too late. truth sent his knights to that side of the map, and reinforced with Raelin. I only had a few Death Chasers to challenge him. There was a turn where I finally got my Ogre over there and would've had shots at Raelin, but Colby won initiative and rolled a big Dispatch that allowed him to protect Raelin from harm.

The whole battle basically took place over by the Wound glyph, though it was hardly ever held. The dice didn't really like me this game at all on top of everything else. I finally did kill Raelin, and I also got a squad of Knights, but that's it. truth played a great game and took me to school.

Loss, 1-2, 530 Points

Round 5 - Heroscape vs. Matt (Migol, Darrak, Axegrinders x4) on Jack of Spades
The last round was a random roll to determine whether you played HS or SW. I was 0-2 in HS, and 2-0 in SW, but fate decided I'd play one more game of HS.

My battle rush here allowed me to get to the glyphs first, which were Common Attack and Move. That was really good for me. I got Nerak up onto the middle turret protected by Death Chasers, and then got the Ogre into the game quickly thanks to the Move glyph.

I don't remember a ton of details on this game, except that I held both glyphs for basically the whole game. I hardly ever missed an attack on an Axegrinder throwing 5-6 dice. My Ogre did a bit of damage also, though he whiffed again (5 dice) and took 2 damage for his trouble. Darrak Hid in the shadows from some big swings, but he went down without doing too much damage. I felt like I was always in control of this game, however when the dust settled, I only had 4 Death Chasers left on the board. A closer game than it actually felt like for me.

Win, 3-2, 530 Losing Points, 6th Place finish

I remained undefeated in games of Summoner Wars where I didn't play Guild Dwarves. If I could've only played some better Heroscape... Still though - all tournies are excellent and this was no different. Congrats to Jexik for winning it all, and for truth for providing a bunch of extra prizes!

Here are the total tourney results. Only 11 players made it, however 2 of them were Jexik and truth! Thanks for coming down, guys!

I apologize for being a bit disorganized for this one - I had basically no time to setup and had to rush straight from work today to get there. Thanks to everyone that came early to help me finish setting up, and also to phantazm21zero who came to help me set matchups and track the cards. Another special thanks to truth for bringing all of the awesome extra Summoner Wars for the prize table! I'm glad we had the designer of the game there playing with us - it was a blast!

Glad to hear Truth made it! I am sure there are many designers out there who wouldn't have bothered to come and support their games. Speaks volumes as to what kind of person Colby is.

Hopefully, I will be able to make the next one.
