Today we held an 8 man Summoner Wars tournament, here in Taipei, Taiwan. We had 9 people who wanted to play, and probably could have gotten some more if we'd scheduled it more than 2 weeks in advance.

Colby was awesome enough to ship us 8 copies of Khan Queso so everyone was able to put one in their deck and use it in the tournament. We had 2 prizes for first and second place, the first place prize being a copy of San Juan and the second place prize being a nice set of dominos.

For the tournament we did a standard 4/2/1 structure, single elimination. Before the tournament each player was given a random race and players were allowed to trade between them if they wished.

[W] = Winner of the match

Round 1 - Mirror Matches

Matt Holland (Orc) vs Mark Wilbur (Orc) [W]- Matt was both lucky and unlucky as he had a 6 long rage chain, but unlucky in that of those 7 attack rolls he only hit 1 time. Mark was able to swing the battle in the end, but the game was filled with tension as both player's Krung's hit the board one after another.

Jay Bernardo (Dwarves) [W] vs Todd Clark (Dwarves) - Todd got off to an early advantage as lady luck did not favor Jay and he had an awful run with his dice. Todd attempted to press his advantage and dropped 2 Heroic Feats on Gror which allowed him to take out an enemy Khan Queso and bring Jay's Oldin to half life, but he didn't quite follow through enough as Jay was able to recover and eventually trapped Todd's Oldin next to Baldar and a stream of defenders allowed Jay to finish him in a couple of turns.

Craig (Elves) vs Chun-yu 'Tony' Chen (Elves) [W] - This was Craigs second game of Summoner Wars so he was a little behind having only learned the game a half an hour before. The end came when Craig's 1HP Prince hid behind a wall only for Tony to drop the Fire Drake and burn straight through and end his cowardly life.

Guy Matthews (Goblins) vs Ben Beaton (Goblins) [W] - This was Guy's first game of Summoner Wars and was quickly schooled on how to use the goblins as Ben was able to use Golbin Rush to clog up the wall slots on Guy's side and reduce the flow of units coming from Guy. With no units on the board save his summoner and a hand full of events; the end came quickly for Guy.

Round 2 - Classic Matchups

Jay Bernardo [Dwarves] vs Ben Beaton [Goblins] [W] - Ben used some well placed Goblin Rushes to cut off Oldin from his wall, then finish the job swapping in Sneeks and using a 'Goblin Horde Attack'.

Chun-yu 'Tony' Chen (Elves) [W] vs Mark Wilbur [Orcs] - Mark almost had Tony missing his Fury attack against Tony's 1hp Prince but Tony was once again able to swing the Fire Drake for a victory.

Round 3 - Finals

Ben Beaton (Goblins) vs Chun-yu 'Tony' Chen (Elves) [W] - Tony did an amazing job of keeping his summoner protected and blocking his side so Ben was never quite able to find an opening to pour in some units to take out the prince and his first probe attack with Sneeks, sent Sneeks running back to the other side of the board with 3 damage on him. When Ben pushed again the seemingly hard a nice shot at ending the game but Tony had other plans asking him "Are you sure you don't want to move Sneeks?" before dropping a Guardian and imbuing the Prince with the Spirit of the Phoenix for 4 damage to Sneeks to end the game and claim victory for the Elves.

Congratulations to Chun-yu 'Tony' Chen and Ben Beaton for first and second place respectively. Thanks again to Colby for the promo cards, I wish I could say that I got some copies of the game sold at the tournament, but the day before I got some people to purchase it from their local store even though they weren't going to be able to make the tournament. Pictures of the tournament can be found on the facebook group 'Taipei Card & Board Game Enthusiasts' including a humorous picture of Khan Queso trapped between 3 walls.

Thanks for sharing the event results. I like the format you chose to use - Mirror followed by Classic followed by Championship. It guarantees that every match during the event will be against a different faction!
