Hey All -
Thought I'd come check some things out on the official site here at Plaid Hat. Fairly new to boardgames, I suppose. I started my cabinet in July of this year (Nearly 2012).
I don't know why I waited so long to pull the trigger on Summoner Wars, as it's availability is somewhat dodgy! I finally got my hands on the Master Set recently, and set down to give it my first couple plays last night with the Mrs. It's great!
First game was Shadow Elves vs Swamp Orcs. I don't think either of us really new what we were doing. It was mostly futzing around getting familiar with cards and ended with a dead Mugglugg. Second game, I broke the deck out that the Mrs. was playing (Swamp Orcs) by card to evaluate the pieces a little so she understood how they work (or at least my understanding of it). I picked up Mountain Vargath, just to kind of feel 'em out. Needless to say, I ended up pinned around all kinds of Vine Walls, used to stall all of the Vargath melee. I lost handily. Interesting tactical possibilities, but not so brain burning it isn't enjoyable with a beer. That's a plus in my book.
I fully intend on getting another premium board and the rest of the sets, as available. I'll keep an eye at my LGS, and wherever else I may able to get my hands on it.
While I'm not particularly familiar with the SW VASSAL module in particular, I wouldn't mind learning some of the nuances that way at some point as well. I know there are a few of you who use that as a method of more consistent opponents.
Sorry for being a bit long-winded. This is definitely one of my better purchases of the year!
