View Full Version : Oldin- Golden for this format?

I said before in the main thread that Grognack seemed really good for this format, but I think Oldin might be even better.
Reinforcements works for any faction, and this format allows him to get some 2-costers (like Berserkers or Guardians) which he doesn't have from his own faction yet.
And Heroic Feat isn't faction specific!
The thought of putting that on Ragnor as a Summoner-assassin, or on an Assaulting Berserker or a Precise Guardian... holy wow.
Oldin
Thorkur
Gror [I think both of those champions are quite good for Oldin back-up]
Ragnor [Summoner-killing]
Required: 2x Spearman, 2x Defender, 1x Engineer (5 commons)
Added:
4x Berserker
5x Guardian
4x Spearman
Thoughts?

I think both are very powerful for this build. Grognak is better for high movement and easy employment of specials through the use of Ice Walls (Blaze and Walls of Ice Shard). I would then drop some shamans for some Spearmen or Archers and Fighters for Warriors.
Oldin is more suited for high powered attacks and wall destruction.
Its just a matter of preference and play style. I think I'd probably side with Grognak because I like the free movement.

I think I might replace Gror. Maybe Khan? If you are really getting swarmed and not drawing reinforcements, Khan is quick to get out and can wreak havoc against the swarmy one life units. Is there a particular reason Gror is in there? He just doesn't seem life he fits as the priciest champion in a deck with tons of two costers.

I think you might have trouble getting and keeping some units down. I know he has Reinforcements, but it just seems like a lot of 2-cost Commons to me.
I also like Precise + Heroic Feat, but are the Guardians going to be attacking Champions/Summoners very often? Maybe I guess...
I don't know - I might just replace them with Warriors or Spearmen. It seems to me that 4 attack dice is going to be as good as 3 Precise attack dice quite a bit of the time - enough to justify reducing the Summoning Cost from 2 to 1 I think. Maybe just...
8x Spearmen
5x Berserker

Yeah, I think you guys might be right when it comes to the costs on the Commons. I still like the idea of Heroic Guardians though. (3 hits is more hits on average than Blagog!)
I'm not sure how often I'll end up playing Free Build anyway. I'm still interested in the stock factions so far, and that's after a lot of games.

Interesting concept. Offhand, I'd go with Oldin as well. I think he's the best for this format.
Summoner:
Oldin
Champions:
Gror
Thorkur
The Eater
Commons:
Required: 2x Spearman, 2x Defender, 1x Engineer (5 commons)
3x Berserker
2x Fighter (Goblin)
4x Defender
4x Spearman
I've never played the "free build" before, but this is probably going to be my first play.
The Eater could probably be changed for just about anything else, and I was almost going to have Con Queso instead (yum..), but paying 1 more for 2 more life and 1 attack seems like a good deal. But, this assumes that when the eater eats a common (including a friendly one) I get the magic for it, which I'm pretty sure is right. Anyway, I feel like Gror and Thorkur are two of the best champions so far, and I don't know if I would be willing to spend the magic on other champions, especially when I've got A Hero is Born in my deck.
I feel like the Goblin Fighter's additional attacks are too good to pass up, but don't want to clog my deck with them. I think 2 is fine, so whenever I draw one, I'll likely be able to throw him out and get free attacks until he's killed. Getting 4 units in attacking position is much easier than 5.
Berserkers are a steal with Reinforcements, and their ability to kill multiple units potentially. Still, I didn't want to overload the deck with 2-cost commons, otherwise my deck will be sluggish whenever I don't have Reinforcements.
Finally, I think Defender and Spearman are two of the best commons so far as well. Though Spearman and the Elven Warrior come close in quality, as 2 attack commons for 1, given the option of Blaze Step or a ranged attack, the deck desperately needs some ranged attacks. As for Defenders, well, if you know how to use it, Engage can be a very strong ability. On top of that, they're the best 2 life common for 1 (only other option is Shaman).

If you add Blagog and place both Heroic Feats on if you can bet that that well kill a summoner or a champion if needed. It will not happen every game but when it does it can be a game ender. Unless you roll bad.

I would put in both Rukar and Blagog. 5 or 7 dice with 5s and 6s counting double?? Outrageous.
