View Full Version : Brand New Summoner Warrior
Like many folks, I just got the SW Master Set in the mail from our online retailer. And like many folks, this was the type of release I'd been waiting for to get into the game.
I love it, my kid loves it, many thanks to you and your team, Colby. I look forward to future releases and *especially* future re-releases, which are getting harder to come by, though I see you still have goodness at the PHG store, where I'll be doing some business shortly.
As I was combing this forum I realized I was pretty far behind as far as the abbreviations and strategies and so forth go, so I wanted to make a thread where I could be a noob and other new Summoner Warriors could, if they wanted, be noobs and not know (yet) what stands for what, and so on.
One thing I noticed in one of our games is that there may be a sort of rock/paper/scissors thing going on, where some of the decks have an edge against some of the others. The Mountain Vargath *crushed* the Benders, who appear to want to play a slow game, whereas the Mountain Vargath appear to want to attack on Turn 1 with their Summoner and a bunch of commons.
Anyway. Greetings (again) to my fellow 'Scapers, and I look forward to poking around here and lining Colby's pockets with future purchases of Summoner Wars goodness.

Under "official units", there is a "Sum. wars abbr." thread you may find useful. Welcome to the site!

For a second there, I was expecting an excuse to post a picture of a newborn.
But yeah, here's a link to the thread that Chardris was talking about.

If you want to compare opinions on your 'rock-paper-scissors' hypotheses, check out the faction stats. (http://www.plaidhatgames.com/sum_forums/showthread.php?t=625) You can log your plays and look at the faction leaderboard.
here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkNjfkkCz6vNdHh2YklveDJPaU51NnhhSzY0bm9jV 1E&hl=en#gid=36) are the specific matchup data.

The beauty of this game is that, although it might look like a r/p/s game, with some clever tactic shifting and unit maneuvering even the hosed faction can win over the hoser. Such as Bender may Stunned their unit, choking the openning, then summon Sorgwen and few Controllers for big damage, or just slow down the game and just unsummon everything with Tacullu
Welcome to the board.

Yeah, I'd be more inclined to say that the Benders have the end in BD v. MV. Deceivers, Mind Control, and Controllers all hit the MV where it counts.

Ok, thanks for the warm welcome, all.
I'm 100% confident that, when it comes to strategy, I have no idea what I'm talking about. :)

I received my copy of the master set about 3 weeks ago. I have played about 10 games. So far I am very impressed with Summoner Wars.
I hadn't played a BD versus MV until yesterday and I must say it was a facinating matchup that I am looking forward to playing again. I don't know if either of us had the right strategy since we are still learning the finer points of the game. but it seemed we were both content to play the game on my side of the board (I was playing BD). I was able to control the tempo for most of the game by limiting attack lanes through wall placement and then clogging those lanes with Deceiver stunned MV commons. My opponent was able to reset the board state via Muster and Fallback a couple of times which forced me to scramble to cut off new avenues of attack. I finally won a war of attrition picking of his non stunned units and chipping away at his champion when possible.
Although I controled the tempo, the game felt it was in contention until the last 2 turns, I had finally acheived a superior board position by then. This was the longest game I have played to date coming in at 1 1/2 hours (most have taken around 45 minutes) and was exiting until the end.

Hmm, when learning the rules always takes a lot of time for your first game. To date though, my fastest games with the Master Set was MV vs SO. It turned into a melee brawl when both sides were trying to invade the other side's territory.
