Truth said he may make a nice board as an online exclusive for those who want it. Post here if you'd buy a nice board, that way he can see how high the demand is for one.

I'd be interested in a nice board for the home games.

Depending on the price, I'd be in.

Aw, heck, who am I kidding? I'd buy it regardless of the price. :p

I'd like several.

Yeah, I'd definitely buy a board not made of paper. The creases kind of bother me when I play, and if I don't even them out enough, the cards slip out of their squares.

I was just coming on here to see if this had been mentioned!

I finally had the chance to play (first impression: love it). As a temporary solution, I used a large piece of plexiglass I have lying around to keep the mat flat and visible. However, I would love a quality, sturdy board, and would be more than willing to pay for it.

GB's custom board is fantastic, but I have precious little free time as it is, and I'd rather spend that time playing than attempting to make something as cool as that (especially since I know mine would come out crappy).

So yeah...add me to the list. :p

If you can't wait for a custom board there is an easy and fairly cheap solution.

You can take your mat to a place that does framing and have it dry mounted on foam core....a good place will be able to get it so flat that you will never know it was folded in the first place. If you do decide to go this route I would suggest having it mounted on 2 boards right across the middle so you can fold it in half (like a regular boardgame board) This will also protect the surface top from getting dirty.

If you are adventurous enough you can do it yourself with a can of spray mount. You probably could also decopodge (modge podge) it to the foam core which will also put a thin "protective" layer on the top.

I do think that Cav may have something in the works though to make some Lexan mats for the boards. You would need to have 2 mats to make a board due to the lexan size though...but they could then be rolled up.

I'd definately like to get something "nice" to play on; and while hard boards are nice, I'd like to see some nice cloth mats. They'd be easy to move around to wherever you're going to play and they'd add a nice touch of class.

I was actually thinking about lamination as a cheap, temporary solution. I did that with one of my other card game mats and it came out great.

After you laminated it, how do you store it? Rolled? Folded? Flat?

I store it loosely rolled. I hate rolling things tightly, because then they won't stay flat (I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere, but I'm just too lazy right now).

I put mine in a poster frame from walmart. Its bigger than the mat but I can keep wound markers and roll dice on it.

I'll second this comment. The creases are driving me bananas. The game is too good for that...so, what I may wind up doing is bringing the mat to a Kinko's or something and have them laminate it.

Depending on $$$, I would rather a nice board from the boss, however.
Maybe something enhanced, with some cool artwork.
Or maybe it could include a promo Merc or something?

Just some thoughts...

Yep I'd DFINATLY buy a good board to play... Office Depot wanted $18.00 bucks to laminate it. That money would be better spent on a custom board!

I like how portable the current map is though. The paper is still pretty thick. If you have 2 (or more) starters, you could probably keep one minty-mint for when the first one collapses. I think it'll be 100+ games before even one of mine gets worn enough to stop using, and that's a lot of time spent enjoying the game.

I would definitely spring for the deluxe board. Having a toddler son that likes to grab things that I'm using...doesn't work well for paper of any kind.

I'm all for a "premium" board as well. I'd like to see ones that are like half a board made out of like mouse pad material (much like M:TG type play mats). That way, you can roll it up when your done and not worry about creases or bends. Then, you make faction specific mats with neat custom artwork and the likes. I'd buy one for each faction!

i thought about buying a picture frame and putting mine in there then hanging it on the wall when i get done. just so i could be the cool kid in school. but in all seriousness i did and it worked out great.

Ahh, cloth maps...
I was assuming the Special Edition map would end up being hard-mounted, but the Cloth Map idea is good, and just as you said: kinda classy.

I'm interested.

What I REALLY want is both the board and the portability- I have no idea if it's really doable, but I'd want a board that could fold down and fit into one of the SW starter boxes. I could carry my cards in a tuckbox, but if a board could be made to fit in the starter box, that would just about be the best thing ever.

Yeah, that isn't possible, except with paper, and maybe cloth, but it seems to me the cloth would get just as badly creased if folded down to fit into the box.

Maybe like a regular game board (I mean like, for example, from Monopoly), except with smaller sections and more cuts so it can fit in the normal box.

That would get really thick, though, since the thickness doubles with every fold.

Hard-mounted it is then.
I'm down for that.
Besides, we can save the cloth map for the special 5th Anniversary Collector's Set that you were talking about the other day, with the special edition collectible action figure and hardcover art book.

OH, i just spilled the beans.

Well, this is sounding more like a custom project idea that I don't have the resources or experience to do right now, but I was thinking maybe it could be done with a few tricks. First, if you trimmed the nice but non essential border with the card pile sections and logos, so it was just the 8x6 board. Then cut that in half, so you have two half boards of 4x6, (Or a half board decorated for each faction?!) With that done, perhaps then it might be feasible to find a way to fold boards into the box. Just an idea.

I am all for a nicer board. The paper mats are fine and convenient for travel but something more stable for home play would be prefered. I'm working on a foam board mat but it is a lot more work than I expected. An "official" board would be much appreciated though.

vote here from England... although I would prefer the roll up version using the rubber type backing so it always lays flat.

This kind of reminds me of the Chicago Bears team a few years ago. They had one of the best defenses in the league, the best special teams, a solid offensive line and decent backs and receivers... and Rex Grossman. I don't think the guy would have been vilified nearly so much if the rest of the team didn't make him look so bad by comparison.

I've played this game at least 35 times in the last month, and I see some wear and tiny holes on one of the mats. If, after 150 games, one of my mats disintegrates, I'll use the other one. If I'm playing a game this much to worry about the wear, that's a good thing.

That tells me you're not playing nearly enough team games.

Jexik

Indeed. 4-5 is not enough, compared to 30+ heads-up games.

KCU Master 2007
12-24-2009, 01:28 PM
Not sure...I enjoy the heads-up game more than team games. Mostly it was because I tend to take charge...not much of a team player when it comes to war games (or strategy games) I've noticed.

Then maybe the 3-player game (with you on the solo side) would suit you more. That way, you get all the authority and power of commanding 2 factions, and can smack-talk twice as many opponents when you win.

I'd love to see a nice board (even though my sets haven't arrived yet, don't worry, I've already ordered them).

I kind of liked the mousepad/playmat idea, but I could work with a foldable hard board, not necessarily one that fits into one of the boxes, just one that folds into a smallish square like a lot of boardgames do. I have limited storage space, so having a solid non-folding board would be inconvenient. I'd still probably buy it though.

My current plan is to do hard-mounted.

I don't know how far along the plans are for hard mounted boards but after several plays this past holiday season, I can honestly say:
1) I DEFINITELY want an upgraded battle mat
and
2) I really want hard-mount boards that come in at least two separate pieces (i.e., one player's half/side of the board would be separate from the other player's but the two would easily be set up across against each other).

Reason for wanting a hard mount board that comes in two halves:
a) each half should fold down quite compactly in terms of surface area and thickness
b) if going to friend's house who already has his own board (or, say, for tournament play) I only have to travel with one board half.

Finally, here's me asking for the moon: a hard mount board that comes in four pieces (!):
If you take the two half theory above but make the player's deck management area a separate board as well, you would be able to do different shaped board set-ups.

Because the gridded battle areas don't have deck management areas attached to get in the way, you could use a couple extra grid areas to make up play areas shaped like a "+" for 4-player, team and non-team games or you could easily make a "T" shape for 3-player, non-team games that's fair because the two outside players don't start right on top the middle player's flanks.

Anywhoo, just some thoughts we had while playing over the holidays.

Talarius

I would also like to have enough boards for 3/4-player games.

As G&T suggests, having the boards be separate pieces (each player's starting half is a separate board) would keep things more compact.

I am planning to make my own boards sometime in the near future (simple version would be artboard, more complex version would be vinyl mats printed at Kinko's) and don't plan to have the deck management areas included on them. Just the main area of the board.

I would definitely throw my money on the table for any merchandise board. And even up the ante to say that, maybe after the undead/vanguard set comes out, you could really make a killing on SW special dice/card holders/sleeves. Sky is the limit. The game and art is solid and unique. A couple poor friends can play it right out of the box, and those of us with some income would very quickly put down for some nicer parts, particularly parts with longevity.

I see a lot of CCG players using cloth-ish mats with art on them. That seems good to me. You could even have, rather easily, diverse custom art for a little bit of a personal touch for the players. I remember seeing third parties online that mount images on mats.

I feel a bit out of the loop on this one, though. What is "hard-mount" exactly?

i think some type of premium wound markers would be a nice compliment with the board

(maybe premiun dice too, but im actually satisfied with the stock dice. just throwing it out there)

im very excited for the release. count me in!

Count me in, and I second the idea that for extra incentive it would be cool if they had premium faction dice included. Or just premium faction dice as a separate product would be cool too.

I got my DDM minis maps laminated at Staples for $6 or so and they've held up very well.

I'd like to see a magic/Yugioh type of foam play mat as well. I like suggestion that they be half a board, help keep them a little cheaper.

Hey ya,

Count me in for buying two premium boards.

Currently I'm planning to laminate the paper ones once I flatten them out enough.

I'd go for split board without borders so four player boards mesh well together.

Wow, off topic but I just got an idea for a six player game once the extra sets come out...
