If, hypothetically, Plaid Hat Games were to produce and sell Ashes playmats apart from the playmats in the organized play kits, would you prefer to have card layout overlays, or just the art alone? Take a look at examples and then vote in the poll below.

Overlay:

Overlay

No Overlay:

No overlay

Note: The poll below is not a competition between the two types and the results do not decide anything. We are just gathering opinions.

I voted, but to start discussion, I rarely find someone who sets up their play area just like mine, and rarely just like the book says you should. Right handed vs left handed also makes a significant difference.

Gotta do no zones.

I voted for no art because that is what I'd prefer, but having a layout option for teaching seems useful.

I think that playmats are for "players" specially, not for "teaching"... of course its gonna be helpfull in a beggining, but no more! players want the cool art witouth any ugly layout! specially because each of us has is own wat to organize the stuff

I think if the layout was predermined before the game expanded, then it would make sense. At this point, our setups are all so variant, that it will just feel odd. I think kika brings up an interesting point about teaching. When I demo, I usually have the cards pre-organized to cut down on the confusion, but I see the benefit. Sure mats are for "players" but the easiest way to make a new player, in my opinion, is cool swag.

For teaching purposes art with the layout zones might come in handy but I think most players will want the art without the layout printed on the mats. At least it's great that you guys finally start printing some Playmats. I hope these will also be available in EU?!

What is they did different layouts? You could pick from 3-5...

All this talk about how mats are for players and not teachers glosses over how incredibly useful it would be to have a mat like the former when trying to teach new players. (please please please gimme a layout)

I want them to have no layout, because everybody has their own playmat in fact - you know what I mean?

I mean, the zones where you put cards, and mostly the draw, PB, conjurations, and discard, may vary depending on the player. For example, I put my PB in front of the deck.

I don't see the poll, but I vote for no Overlay as well due to how many different set-ups everyone uses.

Ashes mats with art and layout zones, of course.

I would prefer no Layout, I think it takes away from the art. All Ashes players know we want the mat to have the artwork!

Now if they come out with Mats with Zones, I do not think it would deter me from buying them though. Depending on coast that is.

3-5 layout options still would not satisfy every possible variation. I played in Tulsa and have played dozens of different people and every time, their setup has been different from the last. I could understand a generic Ashes mat with a layout that you could order for demos and teaching then PB unique mats with no layout at all. But that raises the question of cost.

I would prefer no layout, but don't really care, so long as I can order them soon!

Prefer the overlay one but why not with only the active/exhausted dice pool ? It will be useful.

lunacyfrog commented:

I voted no overlay because I recognize that people organize their cards differently.

However, looking at the overlay it happens to match up with how I set up my cards except that I place my phoenixborn in the front next to my opponent's which I could still do anyway.

So the overlay above won't affect me too much but I still vote no overlay.

Shame that you cannot print on both sides of the mat, then you could do one side with just the art and the other with the art + overlay.

Each player organize the play area in the way they prefer, additionally with this art...how like lines over!!! No Layout and waiting to see more art from Fernanda and please, please, please...made it friendly for your neighbor EU players!!!

I don't even play Ashes, but I have to say it seems a shame to clutter up Fernanda's awesome art with those zone markings.

I brought this up in the slack chat today. Maybe you should have these playmats without the layout, but then make a special 2-player playmat with the layout, cause that would be helpful for teaching.

Lalo commented:

I agree with MightyToenail(felt weird reading that aloud), don't have the art covered by the layout, but make a single version(maybe one with the art form the cover) with the layout.

I also have question, will the other Phoenixborn beside the first 7 get their own artwork? I was a little disappointed they didn't get those, or short stories.

What don't like the name? It's called using a random username generator and then being to lazy to use anything other than that. Though there are various toenail variations that I use. I'd never remember my username for anything if it wasn't kind of freaky.

I would like deployment zones if they were set up the way I like, however I would really not like those deployment zones.

In particular, I think it is *extremely* problematic to put the exhausted and un-exhausted dice pools right next to each other like that.

MightyToenail commented:

I agree with dok. switch the active pool with the conjuration pile.

I didn't say I didn't like it. I just said that it felt kinda weird saying it out loud. Wouldn't you feel weird saying THE mighty toenail(because there can clearly only be one) is right?:P

I love card layouts on playats. However, the art on the mat must be designed around having the card layouts. THe example above is definitely not the case here. If the layout is really only superimposed over any piece of art, then I would rather just have the magnificent art on the playmat alone.

If we end up going with the layout, might I suggest a modification? I currently dislike the way the Phoenixborn is "hidden" behind the draw deck. I would rather have the row with the Phoenixborn + Conjuration pile swapped with the Draw pile + Discard row. This way the opponent can more easily see the Phoenixborn ability.

Not really a big deal as this can be swapped when playing, but I noticed a couple players thinking it was a much better layout when you're not 100% familiar with all of the Phoenixborns.
