Dead of Winter

Crossroads is a new series from Plaid Hat Games that tests a group of survivors' ability to work together and stay alive while facing crises and challenges from both outside and inside.

Dead of Winter is the first game in this series, designed by Isaac Vega and Jon Gilmour. It puts 2-5 players together in a small, weakened colony of survivors in a world where most of humanity are either dead or diseased, flesh-craving monsters. Each player leads a faction of survivors with dozens of different characters in the game.

Dead of Winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. This means players are working together toward one common victory condition--but for each individual player to achieve victory, they must also complete their personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or worst of all: vengeance against the colony! Certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. Work toward the group's goal but don't get walked all over by a loudmouth who's only looking out for their own interests!

Click here to listen to the Plaid Hat Podcast episode 112 to hear the guys discuss the game at length.

Dead of Winter is an experience that can only be accomplished through the medium of tabletop games. It is a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. The survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies, and keep the colony's morale up.

Dead of Winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions, that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves.

Dead of Winter will be on pre-order soon. Customers who pre-order from PlaidHatGames.com will get $20 off the MSRP and will receive a free Kodiak Colby Survivor character along with Standee and Crossroads Card (pictured below).

First! This looks great. A zombie game that I am actually interested in. Well done, Plaid Hat. Well done.

Edit: After listening to the podcast, your argument that this is a game about people, not zombies, is profound. I am even more interested!

This sounds like the most clever use of secret objectives I've yet encountered. Definitely looking into this.

I'm disappointed that Kodiak Colby's hat is not plaid...and I hope he didn't cheat and use that axe on the bear!

Whoa Whoa Whoa.....why does Kodiak Colby have an Axe? He doesn't need an axe to choke out a bear.

Grisamentum commented:

And they threw us a bone saying that this is but the first game in the Crossroads series.

PandaWear commented:

When factoring in the girth of the bear's neck, maybe the axe was used as an arm-extension so he could reach all the way around.

Well, there goes my wallet. I have to say though, the aprox. $30 pre-order seems like a very, very good deal.
Oh and can we expect more games from Jon? or is it too early to say?

Roufus commented:

How 'story driven' will this be? I'd rather not have to read aloud story sections. I like the idea of a story coming together with our collective ulterior motives, but I'm not familiar with story driven games.

Serenity commented:

Listening to the podcast about the game sold me on it. I like that it doesn't center on zombies, but instead the interactions of the survivors. It also helps that it appears that it will be quite reasonably priced.

I will be forced to pre-order simply to get Kodiak Colby. There is no other choice.

joepinion commented:

It's not a story-driven game like Mice and Mystics. There's some extra-rich flavor text here or there but this is more in the "emergent" storytelling category.

I don't get why Colby is holding an axe? Was he chopping trees when he had to kill that bear? This game is flawed! WHY?!

Posted on 2013-11-08.

hextr1p commented:

@m0rph13: Little known fact about Kodiak Colby: he's a lumberjack... and he's okay.

Posted on 2013-11-08.

tortugatron commented:

The bear came at him with the axe and he still choked it out. He just picked up the axe because he didn't know what to do with his arms when the local paper photographer was strolling by and heard the comotion and wanted to take him picture for the article. This is the only story that makes since givn the fact that he is posing.

tortugatron cracked the case.

I have been wanting to find another PHG title to buy other than SW and this may be it.
I am no fan of coops due to the fact that players don't always feel in control of their turns due to others having a different plan, but this game addresses this issue and I love the idea, good one guys

I have been play testing this game for a few weeks.... Trust me Kodiak is worth the per-order!! There are some great dynamics in this game.

BullRyder commented:

I really enjoy playing the Kodiak character as a pre-tester, but I must say that most all of the characters help fill a needed role. You will like the way the game plays and the depth that the characters add. Throw in the different styles of play that everyone around the table has and you will have yourself a great time! Thank you Plaid Hat, Isaac Vega and Jon Gilmour for a truly fun game.
